Where to find sloes?

Looking for sloes to try to recreate Basaran or Patxaran I bought in France last year. Berkeley Bowl? When?

  1. I don't believe they grow around here. I'm not sure they're commercially distributed, never seen them in a market anywhere.

    Blackwell's in SF has Patxaran.

I think you are right, but I can't understand why they couldn't be grown around here. No demand I suppose. Thanks for the Blackwell's suggestion. If I can't find sloes I am going to try my homemade Patxaran with damsons, as Nigel Slater suggests sloe gin can be made with sloes or damsons.

Sloe berries (Prunus spinosa) are reportedly quite astringent, so chokecherries (Prunus virginiana), which grow wild in Bay Area coastal regioins, would probably be a closer match, if you could figure out where to find them.
