Can anyone recommend a good place for an early dinner near the Guggenheim Museum (Fifth Ave. at 89th St, NYC)

    What day of the week?

Cafe Sabarsky is a favorite here but it is not open that late. Here are the hours:

    Monday and Wednesday
    9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
    9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

    Closed Tuesday

It also depends how far you are willing to go and what your budget is; this area is actually kind of sparse for foodie favorites. If you are willing to go across the park or south & east, more options open up.

Tre Otto is my favorite place in the area. It's on Madison Ave bet. 97 & 98 Streets. The food is really good and it's not as expensive as the other places in the area.
There is also a pub/sports bar that I can't remember the name, but it's also in the same block as Tre Otto and they have great burgers. But Tre Otto has a nicer ambiance.

Agree on Paola's -- if budget isn't a real concern. My neighborhood and the best restaurant in the area. I have found the food at Tre Otto OK but dislike the cheek-by-jowel seating and noise. Also like Pascalou and Le Paris across Madison from Paola's, more informal and more reasonably priced.
