Perkins Pies (roadside pie lady) in Bar Harbor/Mt. Desert Island, Maine
Does anyone know if Perkins Pies on Rt. 3 in Bar Harbor/Mt. Desert Island, Maine is open this season? And if so, can someone provide a precise street address for this bakery?
I've scoured these boards and have not been able to find an exact location despite several favorable mentions of their pies. I've also looked online and can't find anything. All I know is that it's located somewhere on Rt. 3 and that there's a roadside sign outside the house depicting a lady in an apron holding a pie. On previous trips to the area, I have not been able to find this sign, unfortunately.
Here are a few links which talk about Perkins Pies, but don't provide an address:
For those who are unfamiliar with Perkins Pies, it's a well-regarded pie bakery that operates out of a private home. I've tried some great pies during previous visits to Maine, but would like to sample Perkins' version since I've heard so many great things over the years.
Thanks so much.
Is Perkins Pies even still around? Or did they quietly stop operating their business a few years ago?
I think I found the answer to my own question.
Unfortunately, it appears that Perkins Pies is no longer in business.
Here's a brief blurb from a July 2012 article in the Mount Desert Islander, which is a local newspaper that serves the MDI/Bar Harbor community:
"...it’s the end of an era on Route 3 in Bar Harbor where the much-loved Pie Lady has announced she’s hanging up her apron. Where the more than 100 people who bought her pies each day will go now is up in the air."
I'm assuming that the Pie Lady referenced above is the one and only Perkins Pies.
Too bad. At least there's still Dot's Bakery in Round Pond and Quietside Cafe in Southwest Harbor for my Maine pie fix.
Yeah, I'm a fan of Amy's Pies, too. So I certainly won't be lacking for pie options during my next trip to the Mid Coast and Down East regions of Maine. Just a little bit disappointed that I wasn't able to try the Pie Lady in Bar Harbor due to my inability to determine her exact street address.
The Pie Lady, along Rt. 3 on the way into Bar Harbor, retired a couple years ago. We're still looking for a new one. She made the best pies.
