Los Angeles Dish of the Month (July 2013) - Nominations

ipsedixit Jun 20, 2013 10:40 AM

Summer is officially upon us. What better way to ring in summer than to nominate a Dish of the Month for July, right?

The June 2013 Dish of the Month was Tacos, lets see what July brings us.

The idea is this: choose a 'Dish of the Month' for the LA area and then collectively try as many versions of this dish as possible during the month of July, reporting back with details and photos. It's great to talk about places you've been in the past, but the idea is to explore new places and make new discoveries.

The dish that gets chosen might be something very specific (pig intestines) but might also be more of a dish category (ice cream). It's up to everyone here, but it probably makes sense to choose something that locals are excited about trying and finding the best and most interesting versions!

Some ideas off the top of my head to perhaps get the juices flowing:

FILLED PASTAS (e.g. Ravioli, Dumplings, etc.)

Anyway, this is the nomination thread for July 2013…you can nominate as many dishes as you want, but once we do the voting thread (which will start on June 26), it will be one vote per user.

To nominate a dish, please (please!) post it in ALL CAPS in the responses below. This thread will be open until 11:59 PM PDT on June 25th.

Sandwiches are too broad a topic.

Exactly. Endless possibilities. Philly cheesesteak, BLT, pulled pork, pastrami, egg salad, fried chicken, roast chicken, lobster roll, meatball, tortas...

What it will turn out to be is 50 responses on how good the Godmother is. 40 responses on how Awesome the Langers' #19 is and 20 countering that the #19 sucks and you need to get the Plain Pastrami with Just mustard. And while Dommy and I might be able to get a few BLT posts in between the Magnificent Europane Egg Salad posts, we might not find any ones from other hounds with different tastes, experiences and geography to give us a BLT rec which will make Me look forward to opening the thread.

Making the DOTM thread too broad, makes it useless.

And sandwiches like the patacon pisao or jibarito con lechon would be never discussed.

Well you can vote for specific sandwiches with little chance of success or use sandwich as an opportunity to introduce us all to your favorite rendition of a sandwich (via photos and exploration that month). Use it to show the rest of us where you find this delicious patacon pisao. I for one would would like to know. Isn't that the point of DOM?

Or get ready for fried chicken.

And in 6 months we'll run out of topics cause we'll have covered "everything" but not all that well.

I think you'd have better luck nominating a category like mashed potatoes and then arguing that fufu is a type of mashed potato.

Mollusks cover both. Better chance of getting that category through instead of splitting up shellfish, squid, octopus, oysters, clams, etc. Won't include crustacean shellfish though like shrimp and lobster.
