Perhaps the most prominent Slovakian restaurant on Hlavna, Kosice's main pedestrian mall, Med Melina offers a wide array of East Slovakian and Italian-inspired dishes (Slovakians seemed to have a strong predilection for Italian cuisine, judging by the number of "Italian" restaurants and pizzerias in town).

Our dinner this evening:

- Beef Carpaccio Thinly - sliced beef meat with olive oil, parmesan and rolls. The coarsely-grated cheese atop the carpaccio gave it a somewhat "local" slant.

- Bryndzové halušky: potato dumplings with sheep's cheese, served with crisped bacon, spring onions ands sour cream - the dumplings were literally blanketed by a thick layer of creamy cheese & sour cream. Chopped spring onions provide an astringent flavour which undercuts the rich cream sauce, whilst nuggets of fatty bacon provided little explosions of pure deliciousness. Loved this dish.

- Pirohy Mäsové: meat-filled dumplings, served with sour cream, chopped spring onions and bacon. Very nice, the Russian-like flavours of East Slovakia showing through here.

- Bigos: stewed sauerkraut with meat sausages and mushrooms, served with brown bread. Another East Slovakian regional dish, very similar to its Polish counterpart (in Poland, bigos is the de facto national dish)

Dessert: Tvarohové palacinky - pancakes with curd and raspberry sauce: marvellous pancakes, the Slovakian palacinky has a softer texture which is distinctively different from Hungarian palachinka.

Very nice service here, once the waitresses warm up to you.
