I realize this is an old thread but I wanted to add some input for anyone else out there looking for good food in Lufkin.
That burger honor belongs to Mom's Diner, located at 900 W. Frank Ave. Mom's has won the best burger award 3 of the past 5 years. They also have yummy homemade Chicken Fried Steaks and hand breaded chicken tenders.
Joe's Italian Grill, located in the Lufkin Mall, had good food but I heard they have new owners and we haven't dined there since that change was made. I will be sad if the quality suffers. Joe's pizza was (and hopefully still is) the best in town, bar none.
We tried The Ranch House at 1200 S. First and found the food and prices to be quite good. I wish them well considering their decision to open a new place with the economy in the shape it's in.
Lastly, I should mention Pete's Place, on Highway 69 South. While their meals aren't anything special, their pies are FANTASTIC especially the Buttermilk Pie and Strawberry Pie (in season). Mr. Pete passed away not too long ago but I believe they are staying in business.

re: Brent Howard
Like Spencer said, Ray's Drive-in for burgers is a must - get a cheeseburger with a big ol' side of onion rings - good stuff. There are actually 2 of them, and I recommend the one on North street rather than the one out on the loop.
Also, I recommend the carnitas tacos at "La Unica" (at 1616 N Raguet St). They have a lot of sides to compliment the tacos - you will not be disappointed.
A few years ago I could have helped you. My best friend's Mom used to have an awesome Italian place there, but she retired and sold it. There is a burger place somewhere on the outskirts that has awesome burgers, but I can't remember the name- maybe "Bob's Drive in". I think they still have curb service. Best burger I ever had. Ask a few locals and they can probably name it.
