Dining in Victoria and the Gulf Islands

I will be spending three days in the Gulf Islands area at an out of the way B&B. We tend to spend our days driving around, looking at the scenery etc. wherever the road takes us. However, we do like to eat. I figure that at least one day will be spent in Victoria and could use some recommendations. I haven't been there in almost 10 years and the last time I ate at Hunters Steakhouse. I would prefer something more interesting this time (however Hunters was excellent) since steak is something I can get anywhere.

We might do Afternoon Tea at The Fairmont Empress Hotel but would like some suggestions for dinner if we decide not to.

I'd also like some thoughts on places to eat some evenings away from Victoria that are romantic, excellent food, etc. Cost is not really a problem, after all I will be on vacation with the love of my life.

  1. Hunter's has been replaced by Yates Street Taphouse. It was opened by two local guys who spent decades between them working for the big chains. Not quite a romantic place but a great place for a relaxing drink and above-average food at excellent prices. Brasserie L'Ecole if you don't mind waiting (no reservations). Tried Ca Va the last time I was in town and it was very good. Less than half a block away is the bustling Stages if you want a more upbeat atmosphere. We've never had a bad meal at Ulla.
