Late notice, but they still had a nice supply (both in Silverlake and North Hollywood), $9.99 a pound. The one I got was frisky.

Seafood Paradise in Rosemead quoted me $8.99 a pound, but Gelson's was closer.

      D'oh!

      But far for me.

      But say, what a price.

Keep posting when you call them, por favor!

          Mr. Taster,

For one lobster, like we needed last night, probably not worth the drive for me. But if I was having a dinner party for 4 or more - you bet I'd hop on a freeway! : )

Have you been happy with the shellfish from there?

It so happens I was looking in to buy lobsters recently because Cooks Illustrated just published a recipe for New England Lobster Rolls, along with a recommended pan for baking those funny top-loading, flat-sided hot dog buns that they use (since they're unavailable at retail outside of the northeast).

But actually I'm just reporting facts, not passing judgment on quality, as I have no basis to do so. I rarely buy live seafood other than clams, and I usually get those from the fresh seafood section of Assi Supermarket in Koreatown. I've always been happy with the quality of the clams I've gotten there, but I don't know if they sell Maine lobsters or not. It's worth asking as their prices tend to be quite good.

Assi IS closer and I've been hearing good things about them - they do often have lobsters. I forgot about them and will give them a try next time!

More importantly - did you make your lobster rolls?!

                ...not yet :)

I'm actually driving out to visit a friend in Phoenix this weekend and was thinking about taking them to his place, but wasn't sure they'd survive a 5-6 hour car ride in a styrofoam cooler.

I'm not a dad, but I love lobster and had a hankering today.
I was thinking of grabbing a few, but then noticed that the Cousins Lobster truck is down at Playa Vista park where they're having a free concert from 5-6:30. Lobster roll, here I come!
I've been checking the Van Nuys 99 Ranch lately and they haven't been below $8.99 for the chicken lobsters and 10.99 for the larger ones in awhile.

        John, your plan sounds perfect!

And FYI, the lobsters at Gelson's ranged from 1.5 to two pounds.
