Little Baby's Ice Cream in West Philly

lachatte Jun 16, 2013 08:49 AM

Anyone been? My 90-year-old walker-using ice-cream-loving mother lives nearby, and I'd like to take her. Is the space roomy enough -- and the ambience not too over-the-hipster enough -- so that she'd feel comfortable?

There don't seem to be many other places in the immediate area where you can get a cone.

There's isn't much seating, only a few seats in terms of window bench seating.

They don't have regular flavors but they are very good except for Pizza. I had a difficult time wrapping my mind around the fact that I was eating ice cream but it tasted exactly like pizza.

i haven't had their pizza ice cream. i did have their bbq ice cream, which was very good, and tasted just like bbq.

i've only been to their store (fishtown) 1x.
i've gotten their ice cream in pints at stores a few times; i liked them, but wound up liking zsa's a lot more. the little baby's pints of ice cream seemed to me to be a bit heavy on the stabilizers. I get that they're natural (I think it's guar gum and carageenan), but the whole thing wound up seeming a bit gummy.

I haven't been to that location, but they have incredible ice cream. If it's not a comfortable location, it'd probably still be worth it to maybe get some ice cream to go for your Mom. Their bourbon bourbon vanilla is amazing.

Thanks for replying after all that time, and for the recommendation. We'll definitely stop in and get some treats for Mom -- she lives for ice cream! (What the heck -- not a bad thing to live for at age 90, right?)

I'd second the Zsa's recommendation. I know you want to get a cone in the neighborhood, so go to little baby's (I've never been.) But if you can make it to the Headhouse Market some Sunday, get a container of Zsa's to take home and share with mom. (They usually have a table at the Sunday market.). I'm a huge fan of the lemon buttermilk, which I think is incredibly refreshing (love that buttermilk tang) - just the thing for a hot summer day. The peanut butter is awesome too. They don't do cones, do have ice cream sandwiches, though I've never tried them. Zsa's is now my favorite ice cream treat.

OK -- Zsa's is now top of the list. We live near Weaver's Way co-op, and I've seen it there. Now I can't wait to try it.

Meanwhile, we did take mom to the Green Line at 43rd & Baltimore and had some delicious Weckerly's. Haven't made it to Little Baby's but we will.

So much ice cream, so little time....

Zsa's is terrific. One of my favorite flavors is the coffee ice cream with pieces of chocolate cake in it. I can't remember the name, but it's really great. The lemon buttermilk is also terrific.

the blackout, I think. it's best to the let the ice cream melt a little first prior to eating it. I've been working my way through a container of Zsa's Salted Caramel, so good!
