Legend UWS: first encounter.

Dan dan noodles, pickled cabbage - 8 out of 10. Small sample, but very encouraging. It's deserted at lunch.

Anyone else been in?

  1. Thanks for the report, but were you talking about the Legend on West 109th Street or the Legend on West 72nd Street (which I thought was closed due to DOH issues)?

      1. re: MrGrumpy

        It reopened soon after.

i was there the other night and had mapo tofu and spicy sichuan noodles. i prefer the mapo tofu at grand sichuan, but did really enjoy the noodles. both dishes were smaller and more expensive than the norm, but not so much that i wouldn't return because of it.

GS74? coasts, how would you compare GS74 to the rest of the GS family?

          1. re: knucklesandwich

not the best of the group, but still the best for the neighborhood. i live very nearby and order a few times per month.

            1. re: coasts

I think GS74's translations of popular GS dishes range from lame (black beans in the double cooked pork) to strange ("chongqing style" anything) to wretched (dan dan noodles).

Ordered from L72 last night. Spicy mung bean noodles were very good. Cold pork belly with garlic sauce was too sweet.

      2. The chongqing chicken was excellent - spicy, crispy and showered with dried red chilies and fried garlic. Better than the versions at Grand Sichuan UWS and even Legend in Chelsea. I've only been to Legend West 72nd once and therefore can't vouch for its consistency but I'll definitely be back to sample other dishes.

        1. I was there today for lunch

Hot and sour soup - 7.5/10 - not as good as Szechuan Gourmet on 56th, but pretty good.

Pig intestine with tofu pudding (that's what it said, although I wouldn't call it "pudding") - 8/10 Nicely spicy, The intestine mixed well with the tofu.

I will be back there (it 2 blocks from my office).

          1. Glad to hear they're back. I've only ordered from them once before the closure. They seemed like there were going through some transitional issues as the guy ordering the phone was only familiar with the Penang items. But I hope it has been worked out by now.

knucklesandwich, GS74 is not very good compared to the rest of GS locations. I've ordered from 74 in the past because I had no other choice.
