Ginopolis Bar-B-Q ?? [Suburban Detroit]

Lefty Jun 11, 2013 11:44 AM

We are staying In Novi this weekend and looking for a good BBQ place for drinks and some good bbq. Ginopolis is the only place I could find on this board, is it the place to go, or is there any other rec's? Thanks

Ron's has some good BBQ. It is not a fancy place and they do not have indoor seating that I know of. But if the weather is nice they have some outside tables and chairs.

    Best regards, Tony

There's Lockhart's in downtown Royal Oak, less than 30 minutes away from Novi.

I ate at Blue Tractor in Ann Arbor last weekend and enjoyed it. Smoke flavor could of been a little stronger, but all the meats were tender and juicy. About a 25 minute ride from Novi.

I didn't think Ginopolis was anything special or worth a second visit.

Actually I did find Slow's, but that's probably outside of our designated drivers comfort zone. However, Beans & Cornbread certainly looks interesting. Thanks

I'm not saying Ginopolis is bad, but it is waaaay past its prime. Caters to the older (much older) set. Service was terrible when we went a few years ago. There are much better places to sample around the area.

              Oh? Search for: Slow's

Ginopolis bbq ribs are comfort food that I grew-up eating. They are not classic BBQ in the sense of Texas, Carolina or KC.

Slow's has better BBQ, but the service can be, um, slow. Recent reviews suggest that they may have addressed their front-of-house problems.

Also consider the ribs @ Beans & Cornbread. It's
a wonderful soul food operation that does a good
              job with ribs.

This seems to be true. I've now been there three times in the past year or so, and each time, service has been at the very least good, up to exceptional. I was/have been one of the loudest voices regarding the lousy service Slows was putting out, but based on my recent visits, service does seem to be a priority, now. It categorically *wasn't* before, and now they seem to have corrected this.

The food is as good as it's always been, and don't forget to ask for the mustard sauce that they don't automatically bring to the table anymore. They keep it refrigerated, now, and I happen to like it a lot.

Oh, and quite honestly? Get your driver to man up and go here. It's worth the drive from Novi. Really.

While I love Slow's (and I do mean LOVE it) I think any time you are recommending it to anybody you simply MUST mention the wait. It is not at all uncommon to wait for 2+ hours to get a table. Especially if you have a group > 4, they have very limited seating for larger groups.

That said, they have expanded so the wait isn't quite as bad. In the summertime they also have the patio which helps. And if you're not against sitting at the bar (which I am not) you can usually find a spot for a small group at the bar quicker than you would get seated at an actual table.

I just wanted to point out that this is another potential issue for those looking at Slows. I love it, but it is VERY popular.
