Pasta Carbonara?

Any recommendations on where to find the City's best pasta carbonara? Looks like it is on menu at RPM Italian. Any experience there or elsewhere? A special request for my wife's birthday dinner, so willing to go anywhere. Thanks for your suggestions.

  1. I haven't been to RPM and can not speak to their carbonara, but know a number of people who love it. I even directed a colleague there for his anniversary dinner and they had a wonderful experience and outstanding service attentive to their special occasion.

La Bocca Della Verita in Lincoln Square has a pretty good version. I'll admit I wasn't very impressed my first time at the restaurant, then I met one of the owners in another context and she touted the carbonara. We went a short time later, and she was right! They have a few sidewalk tables, which makes for a pleasant summer evening. It is very casual, however, which may or may not be what you want for this occasion

My only other local experience with pasta carbonara was buying guanciale at Publican Quality Meats, some pasta from Pasta Fresh (I know one school of thought says dried pasta for carbonara but we also enjoy fresh), Pecorino Romano, and a farm egg, and making it at home, paired with an Italian red. If you cook, this could be a nice birthday week surprise.

Thanks for the reply. This time, RPM. Next time (with more time), I'll make it at home.
