What luck I popped on here this morning. I'm actually from Laredo (living in Austin now).

It really all depends on what you are looking for. I'll give you a few hints from the "casual dining" side of things. Local haunts.

Tio Hut 601 E. Calton Rd. 956-723-5430 (Laredo) - Everytime I make it to Laredo I must stop in here. I recommend the "Tampiqueña Plate" which offers a little bit of everything.. a puffy taco, enchilada, fajitas and a flauta. Their salsa is awesome and it is a family owned place. If you like soup, their tortilla soup is among the best I've ever eaten. I've never actually seen any turn-over in the waitstaff..and I've been going there for over 10 years.

El Rincón del Viejo
4548 Doctor Mier at Gonzalez, Nuevo Laredo (011-52-86-77-12-25-23) - it's a great place in Nuevo Laredo that is a cab drive away. They've got great fajitas and a nice atmosphere. You can dress up or go in your shorts to this place. Aesthetically pleasing and really good food. They've got "cabrito" cooking on an outside spit... Nice.

Danny's Restaurant (Laredo) there are a few locations of this restaurant..some are 24-hours. Inexpensive and good.

That is just a couple of hints. Others that would not miss are Cotulla Style Pit Bar-B-Q
4502 McPherson Ave (956-724-5747) (great breakfast/lunch), Favaratos 201 W Del Mar Blvd
956-722-1802(for italian), and Los Jacales 620 Guadalupe 956-722-8470 (breakfast)

I am a huge fan of El Rincón del Viejo in Nuevo Laredo and of that city in general. Inside or outside (In a beautiful garden with water pools) dining, good service, and a wonderful selection of charcoal-grilled meats make this a unique place, only 1 mile west of the main city sqaure. Try to order cabrito, sweetmeats, or the rollada. They also offer a nice mixed grill. I suggest that you don't waste your time
on fajitas. Good fajitas can be had almost anywhere.

There is also great cabrito/grilled meats place on the west side of the main plaza in NL, whose name I don't remember. There are only 2 of them in the area, both west of the square; both good. But stay away from the "chips"; they are thick and greasy,in the Mexican fashion and are the ugly side of American influence. Ask for corn tortillas instead.

Open till 2AM, try the Los Carboncitos for good grilled meats and bean soup when everything else is closed; 2114 Campeche, a few blocks north of the main sqaure and a couple of blocks west of Guerraro Ave.

Do try the locally made ice cream and fruits sold from stands on the periphery of the main sqaure, particularly the large one across from the Rindon Hotel (Never stay there)...especially the coconut-coated choclate covered vanilla on a stick.

My advise to visitors in Nuevo Laredo: Explore and you will be rewarded.

My husband and I make the pilgrimage to Laredo at least once a year to shop, eat & drink. A favorite or ours for upscale in Laredo is the steak house at the La Posada hotel. We have had both steaks and fish from the menu and thought it was a real value compared to an upscale steakhouse in Houston. The atmosphere is also quite nice at night with candles on the tables and a small bar downstairs.
