  1. I just happen to have a few that I culled from Chowhound, mostly. The comments are not mine, they are from others on the board.

    Per Chowhound 10/01:

Rosario's@ King Wm. Dist- 1014 S. Alamo 210-223-1806 gets the general nod for Mexican at night
Shilos is a great German deli/restaurant almost on the Riverwalk, but it's been there longer than the Riverwalk. I love the place.

    Chowhound 7/02 Near Riverwalk:

    Tex-Mex:

    Henry's Puffy Tacos
    The Little House
    Oasis
    Rueben's
    *LaFogata's
    Taqueria de Mexico
    Blanco Cafe (check if open)
    Los Barrios
    Mi Tierra (best 2-6p)
    El Mirador
*Pico de Gallo (across street fr the Market. Same owners as Mi Tierra, better selection, more reliable).

    Other:

    *Schilo's
    Bob's Smokehouse
    Chris Madrids
    Earl Abel's
    Los Barrios
Karam's west of Market Square about two miles on Zarzamorra. It's a more festive place with outdoor seating. Stick with cheese enchiladas or puffy tacos

For "fine dining", the riverwalk has a couple choices that haven't been mentioned - Biga and Las Canarias.

Las Canarias is in the La Mansion del Rio Hotel, and the food is really very very good. I've eaten here more than Biga, so I know the restaurant better. French techniques, Texas food like lamb, 1015 onions, local berries, seasonal specialties.
      Lunch and dinner.

The pastry chef is *amazing*. Even if you don't get dinner there, stop in for dessert and coffee. It is a fine dining establishment, and the prices reflect this (expensive for SA, but a good value based on what the same would cost in other major cities).

The "tasting menu" is always great and a good value.

Biga is more of a french/fusion thing. The chef/owner is from Australia.

Now, the restaurant that is often called the best in Texas is "La Reve", which is off the river walk, but is supposedly fantastic.
I've never eaten there, and reservations aren't always easy to get. Ask the concierge at your hotel if you have one - they often have connections.

    2. Many people consider the Riverwalk a tourist trap. Two places that I've tried and would return to are:
Schilo's kind of a German deli, great for lunch - it's up at street level, not down on the Riverwalk.
Boudro's a nice dinner place on the river.
Karams on Zazumorra(sp?) has great Mexican food but is not within walking distance from the Riverwalk.
San Antonio is a great city with lots of history. Hope you have a good time there.

      1. We were down on the Riverwalk last Friday and tried a place that I normally wouldn't have tried because it was in the River Center, which is a shopping mall. The name of the place is Luciano's, (who comes to San Antonio to the Riverwalk to eat italian food?). It's italian, not terribly authentic but the food was tasty and they serve a little potato cake with some of the dinners that was delicious. Medium priced but worth it.

        1. We were there as tourists and sure enough, the area is full of tourist oriented restaurants. We did talk to someone who was working there and he said Rosario is his favorite restaurant in the area, near by but not along the so-called river.

          1. re: Peter

The Riverwalk was built for tourists and it's the main San Antonio attraction so of course it's touristy but that said, Pesca, Las Canarias, Biga on the Banks, Fig Tree, Acenar, Boudro's are all very good and as they are a bit more expensive are often not as crowded. Bohanan's and Houston Street Cafe are close and good, too.

          2. For local Mexican breakfast or lunch, you may want to try Blanco Cafe on St Mary's Street. Right off the river walk. Not much of a view. Just good food. Down the street from Holiday Inn Riverwalk.
