OK Hounds, Please recommend a great meal for our night off while on vacation. We want some sexy and fun food and drinks!

  1. so are you staying in Highland Park for vacation?

    1. No need to drive up to 30 minutes. Highland Park and its immediate environs have great Mexican food.

My two favorites are Huarache Azteca on York and Metro Balderas on Figueroa.

I love Huarache Azteca but it's not really date night- I'd take the kids along for lunch.

Date -- maybe Good Girl Dinette for Vietnamese? Sonny's Hideaway just opened and looks like they have a great drinks menu.

What I'd probably do for a date in HP (we live right next to HP) is dinner at Good Girl Dinette, followed by ice cream at Scoops and then maybe an after dinner drink at Sonny's.

Two thumbs up for Good Girl Dinette!

          Two thumbs up for Scoops!

Um... we've never been to Sonny's, so can't say.

But YAY Good Girl DInette and Scoops!

Sonny's is new - as a disclaimer I've not tried either. But the cocktail list looks intriguing and the atmosphere looks datey.

      2. from JG, based on your "drinks" criteria

Under the same criteria, Rivera in DTLA was pretty awesome when I went.

        1. I don't know what it is, but we love Chico's at Ave 50. Whether it's the crazy decor, the potato enchiladas with green sauce or the many Bohemias we seem to keep going back. My Taco at York and Ave 63 is another favorite but no cerveza. There's La Fuente further down Figueroa at Ave 56 that's decent.

We absolutely love Chico's, but (a) it's beer (but no Negra Modelo!!) and wine only, and (2) it's a lot of fun, but tiny and not particularly sexy, except maybe for the saucy waitress. And they close at 9 pm.

For great drinks, good food and fair prices we like Yxta at 601 S. Central Ave. at the corner of E. 6th in DTLA. It's as far as you can get from the Aztec-warrior beer-poster school of Mexican restaurant, but both food and drink are far superior to those of their older cousin, El Arco Iris on York Blvd, which I would not recommend.

          2. Cacao Mexitessan on Colorado in Eagle Rock.

Go on a week day, avoid the crowds. I think their food and drinks are really, really special. I'm still thinking about the agave margarita I had two months ago.

That's "Mexicatessen," and Yes it's very good, if a bit cramped. You do have to order at the counter, but they bring the food and drinks to the table pretty quickly. They had only beer and wine when we were there, but that was about a year ago. Very well-done and original takes on some classics.

            2. babita for mexican
              hinotori for japanese

both under a 30 min drive from highland park.
