Austin: Kirby Lane Cafe

When I was in Austin recently I had a late night breakfast at the original Kirby Lane Cafe. I hadn't been back to Kirby Lane in almost ten years. It's still there and the food is still very good. I had an old favorite, the Chicken Verde Omlette. A nice omlette with chicken (white meat only, unfortuantely for me) with a verde sauce. Lots of tomatillo and cilantro in the sauce. Served with very good home fries.

Only down side is the place was nearly deserted. Just a few diners. Back in my Austin days, it would have been mobbed at 11:30 p.m. on a weeknight.

  1. I know lots of people that don't go there anymore.

The main two reasons given are the noise level and the lack of cleanliness.

I used to go there a lot - late at night - little hung over.

It was the noise that got to me. The staff seems to adjust the music for their own pleasure, rather than that of the diners. It's loud and obnoxious.

And really, REALLY annoying - especially when you don't feel too good to begin with and you're hoping a plate of migas or bowl of tortilla soup will cure what ails ya'.
