Austin Cheese Shop

  • t

Did a search on yer board couldn't find much in the way of this: NYC Hound headin' home to TX for a spell, looking for a fromagier of some sort in/around Austin - preferably a gourmet shop with a "Cheese Guy" or an actual cheese specialty store (as opposed to an HEB fridge case)...french, italian, spanish, import, fresh, etc...

  1. I haven't been able to find anything to beat Central Market central location.

If there's something else, I'd like to know about it, too.

But I think CM does a bang-up job.

I can only speak for their Dallas (area) locations, but I agree: I have never seen a cheese selection as broad, deep or well-tended as Central Market's. Their Neal's Yard Dairy selections alone are pretty amazing. And that's just the tip of the iceberg!

the owner of formaggio kitchen (a really good cheese shop in cambridge, mass, with a ripening cave in the basement) was a cheese consultant who helped central market build its cheese department. i think that central market's got a really good cheese department for not being a cheese-centric store. not the same as murray's in nyc, but it's got a decent selection . . .
