Looking for DC hidden gem or 'hole in the wall' for Visiting Guest

Have an old friend coming to DC tomorrow and we're meeting for dinner. His suggestions were for 'something ethnic' or a good 'hole in the wall.' I would prefer to stay west of capital for easier commuting. Prefer more of a local crowd (no tourist trap) , local ownership (no chains), reasonable to moderate pricing (nothing too fancy for these Pacific NW boys), and good atmosphere for conversation and catching up. Appreciate any and all suggestions!

Chez Auntie Libe for Senegalese food. Up Georgia Ave. Liberté can really cook up a storm. poulet yassa, maffé with lamb, manioc, and whole fish make for a real feast. Best to over-order here and get a taste of everything. If you really want to go all-out, call in advance and order the thiackry for dessert.

A real hole-in-the-wall. You're not in Kansas (or Oregon) anymore.

Zenebech Injera. Always delicious, relaxed atmosphere.

Not exactly west of the Capitol (more like N-NW), but Keren would be suggestion.

When I think affordable, reasonable, locally owned hole-in-the-wall in Northwest, I think Steak & Egg Kitchen.
