galangal powder EMERGENCY omg

Yaqo Homo Jun 1, 2013 03:27 AM

Looking for dried, ground galangal powder, sometimes called Laos powder. But where the heck do I find it? Fairway has a pretty good spice section but I don't think they have galangal. I once knew the names of a couple specialty markets in NYC that specialized in mystical exotic spices of the Orient but I have forgotten what these stores are a called and I'm not sure they would even have galangal.

For my purposes, I'm not really interested in the fresh stuff because I'm making a rub/spice mixture of all dried ingredients.

pls halp

The intuitive thing is to go to Chinatown. I'm guessing there are a bunch of places where you can get it, but one obvious one is the Bangkok Grocery on Mosco St. between Mott and Mulberry.

      Check Kalustyan's, 28th and Lex.

Ah, that's the place I was thinking of. I'm in the neighborhood too. I'll check it out when it opens.

If Kalustyan's doesn't have it (they've been out of an awful lot of things the past couple of times I was there), check out Spice Corner just up the street. They have a terrfic selection, usually at much better prices than Kalustyan's.

Very nice people, too (not that the folks at Kalustyan's aren't fine, but the Spice Corner guys are particularly nice).

If you can't find the powder you could buy the fresh root and dry then grind it.
