So what's the average Chowhound's age?? (Part 2)

(Quote) BobB Mar 18, 2013 07:46 AM

I've still got that spreadsheet stashed away, so if we want to add some more votes to this (or maybe start over, given that all those of us who voted last time are now four years older), I'm up for it.(/Quote)

So here it is! What is your age (or the age you admit to)?

I am 43 and will turn 44 Sept. 9 (or as I like to say, "I am 29.95 plus shipping and handling")

if she/he was 10 that mean thier first post was at age 4

      1. Older than a lot of us imagine. My guess the median age would be about 50.

I am 58, and have been using Chowhound about eight years, I guess.

        1. I was born in the year of the Chevy.Bel Air that is.

          1. PotatoHouse, you are exactly 1 year older than me!

I am 42 and will turn 43 on September 9.

p.s. I'm curious, what was the average Chowhound's age four years ago?

Voting seems to have stopped, so here's a (for now, at least) final update.

The last batch included a number of 20-somethings, so the average and median have both dropped to 43. Youngest 15, most distinguished 75. Most common age still 59 (eight Hounds). By decade: three teens, twenty-five 20s, fourteen 30s, eighteen 40s, eighteen 50s, thirteen 60s, five 70s.

                  1. re: PotatoHouse

You can add four years to all those ages, PotatoHouse. Tempus fugit, you know...

                  1. Can't remember if I responded in the last one, but I'm 31 as of a week ago.

Funny...I had a feeling we might be the same age for some reason! 31 at the beginning of May...

                      1. 29.95 plus shipping and handling? That's cute. I am just a few months short of an early senior citizen discount. Born a few moths after Elvis joined the Army.

                        1. err, that would be months. no moths on me, yet.

Had mine before we moved. It's no big deal. The worst part is drinking all that crap the day before.

It's not the "drinking" part that got to me!

I hear you. The "end" result is just as bad.

The best part is the prostate exam thrown in, and that feeling before you go under. The last two times the nurse said, "time for margarittaville." Oh yeah, 56.

                                                1. re: James Cristinian

I've got to wonder why the nurse is giving you a prostate exam just before the colonoscopy.

                                                  1. re: mucho gordo

It's not the nurse doing it, she's one of the jillion team members hovering over you before the big event. I asked my doctor afterward and he says he takes a poke around. It saves what I've heard is an unpleasant experience. The colonoscopy is fine, it's the night before......

                                                    1. re: James Cristinian

Actual, true, real colonoscopy story. My doctor knows I work for a big retailer, and in his best New York accent, leans over, while everyone is banging around trying to get the suction to work and asks, "You guys have a Dyson handheld vacuum on sale. Is it a good deal?" Me, in my narcotic addled state, Yes. You see what you young whippersnappers have to look forward to. Again, 56 here.

                                                                                                  1. 21. Honestly part of the reason I like Chowhound is that it skews so much older than my social circle. Change of pace.

I'm 45 and I have a theory. The only real difference between my childhood and my parents childhood, as far as the impact of technology, is television. The difference between your childhood and your parents' is vast. When I told my kids (when they were old enough to understand say, 10 - 12) that in my childhood we had only three TV channels, no computers/internet/iPods, no cell phones, etc. They asked what we did. I said we actully got together with our friends and played outside at all times of the year.

                                                                                                        1. re: John E.

Sure. Take that "worst food-related date ever" thread that accumulated several hundred replies a while ago. There were replies along the lines of "I cooked a terrible meal, and we've been together 30 years now" and "that date went terribly, and I should have known then, now we've been divorced going on 10 years". That's the sort of experience that my friends and I don't have.

We don't talk in time frames of years, let alone decades.

                                                                                                          1. re: lamb_da_calculus

That makes sense. When I got out of college, I ended up in the broadcast advertising business and interacted with much older people every day. Of course that type of interaction still happens with young people. What we did not have was the mostly anonymous exchange of ideas like we have here. Everyone is at the same level and there is not a power structure.

                                                                                                          2. re: John E.

But if you are asking what is the average age of Chowhounders....all you are going to be able to calculate from this survey is the mean, median, and mode of those who respond.

                                                                                                                  57.

You are actually very close to the start of the Baby Boomers, at least that's how I understand the way demographics are defined.

My mother was the epitomy of this definition, born in Sept of 1946, her father had arrived home just after Christmas of 1945. ;) Although the war had ended months before, he was basically handed papers and told to "find his own way home." It took him months. His tale of hitching rides on cargo planes, trains and ships was the only war story he would ever tell.

                                                                                                                                      1. re: John E.

(and I can't let that kind of thing go"

Seems they are called either "the silent generation" or "the lucky few." Born between 1929 and 1945, my guess is that the birth rate at that time was fairly low, due to the Great Depression and then the war, and therefore aren't considered as having a very large impact.

My mother's 3 older siblings would fall into this category, as would both of my in-laws. As an early "Gen-X-er" I would say their impact on me was quite great. They would also be the parents of most of my friends.

                                                                                                                                                    1. Aha, PotatoHouse, I was also born on September 9th! But way back in 1933! '-) I've only skimmed the list, but so far I think I get the most candles on my cake! But we have to get a fire permit to light them all... <sigh> EIGHTY? Did someone say eighty? How did this happen?

OK, well, I actually had to do the math. "Um, let's see, I was born in 1969, so that makes me . . . um . . . 44." Remember when you were a kid and someone asked you how old you are and you said, "I'm nine and a half" instantly?

We were talking about life and problems, and after I discussed something with him, he followed my statement with, "I'm glad I don't have that problem; knock on wood," as he rapped his knuckles on the table, he then said, "That must be the door, I'll get it."

                                                                                                                                                                          1. re: jrvedivici

I spent 5 minutes this morning looking for my keys. They were about 6 inches from my purse on the kitchen table, just where they should have been. My poor dog was astounded by all the cursing.

                                                                                                                                                                                  1. re: KrumTx

As he's rummaging through the freeze to get the box out and he pulls out my now frozen dress shirt I was wearing the night before. No idea how that got in there!!

That was the liquid form of dementia I had poured myself the night before.

My husband has "lost" car keys, sunglasses, wallets, remotes, etc. that way ever since I met him 26 years ago.

Whenever he asks: "Has anyone seen my keys?" my stock reply is: "They're wherever you left them last." Of course, that might be the dishwasher...

And a second later everyone was laughing at him because they were perched on top of his head.

I once saw my dad go into a bit of a panic looking for his cell phone while. The reason it was funny is because he was in my car TALKING on the cell phone to the big brother.

If you don't know what it means, go root for the Diamondbacks. Luckily, I think my rough ol' hide will protect me from the objections to com.

I lived in NJ when Bucky (Effing) Dent and Goose Gossage were honored in my town in 1978 after their WS win. For a 20 year old girl, Bucky was quite the looker. :-)

Maybe, but my Texas Rangers were within one strike - TWICE - to win the series in 2011. Gosh, it hurts just typing this.

The Yankees blew a 3-game lead for the ALS to enjoy that worse-ever collapse - including winning Game 3 with a score of 19-8, the longest ever post-season 9-inning baseball game.

My grandfather was from Houston and was a lifelong Oilers fan. For the past decade I've enjoyed jumping on bandwagons - the Saints (lived there until age 12), the Bears and Packers. I've tailgated twice in Green Bay (that qualifies the bandwagon jump, right?) and no other city does it better. Talk about good grub. And kind folks happy to share with strangers.

(and I can't stand NE). One thing is for certain, Bellichik would not waste his time if he didn't have a plan for Tebow, and good for Tebow he deserves a chance to prove he doesn't belong in the league. It will be interesting to watch.

But "Town" makes sense for the Boston area.

I've lived in Dallas For almost 9 years now, and never heard anyone call Dallas (or Ft Worth) The City. And until yesterday, I had never heard anyone call NY,NY "The City." So I couldn't resist inserting the plug.

And yes, The Hub of the Universe is called Bean Town.

Certainly not 'The City', as we had our own cities that were much more important to us than that far away land.
Living for years in 'Chicagoland', we called that city 'Downtown'. Even though our own city had a downtown, too, going to Chicago was 'going downtown'.

It's not used in the Chicago area as a way to refer to the city, or in going to the City of Chicago. I'd never heard of it til the TV show.

He said......."Where in Des Moines is times square?"

Pickin' on Iowa isn't really fair. It's really cliche. Kinda like kickin' a crippled kid. But, in fairness, the night I spent in Des Moines was the longest week of my life.

I just don't understand why the rest of the world is assumed to use it for NYC, as if that were REALLY the only city that matters.

Or am I just reading the whole discussion wrong?

But in you live somewhere in 'The Cities' and you wish to go to a particular place in either Minneapolis or St. Paul you use a proper name with the exception of downtown for either city, Uptown is in SW Minneapolis and Lowertown is a section of downtown St. Paul, otherwise every neighborhood has a name. Oh, Dinkytown is the University of Minnesota.

There's not really a traditional downtown there anymore, just hotels and high rise offices. So saying you're going into 'The City' here wouldn't tell anyone where you're really going.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  1. re: kitchengardengal

At least for those of us in the Jersey 'burbs.

(oh so gratefully) almost 18 years ago, and lived in the East Bay when i first got here (i'm now in San Francisco proper, for the last 10). Immediately i was made aware that San Francisco was "The City". I never questioned it, and oddly enough never made the connection to NYC. But my cousin would come to visit me often and after awhile she started referring to L.A. as "The City" (she lives in Simi Valley). i was all, NUH-UH. L.A. should be referred to as "the Sprawl".

NYC has City in its very name. So the short version is..City.
Boston doesn't use the term City much, or does it? For example, the "City of Chicago" is pretty common, but we still just say 'downtown'.
Twin Cities, again, a shortened version of the already nicknamed cities, thus..The Cities, as John E. pointed out.

When I lived in Columbus, Ohio, we went 'downtown'.

I'm interested now to know if other metro areas that have the word 'City' in their name use that nickname or another.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    1. re: kitchengardengal

I think that most people outside of the Tri-state area refer to Manhattan as “New York.”

Lots of family memories on film were probably tossed. :-(

It has been added to the family files! Who knew?

In Minnesota it's "the cities" as in "I'm going to the cities this weekend". We never refer to them in conversation as the "Twin Cities".

To my mind, Yelp is kinda like a college sophomore level food discussion. This Site is more like second year of a Master's program, right before graduation.

But, it must be on a Hard Roll. Not Wonder Bread. I know I guy in the AG's office who told me Gov. Christie once sat on a waiter who served him a PR, E & C on soft white bread.

But then, you won't have a buzz either.

Personally, I had to go the PR, E, & C route this morning. Mom has a way of making that happen. Either that or the bottle of rum my buddy dropped off when he came to visit us from his place in Barbados. All good, in the end.

I've met Christie. Didn't think much except, "Dear God, given how much you must eat, how long do you spend sittin' in the morning?".

I couldn't help but make fun of him upthread. I probably never will stop. I've got a feelin' the Fat Man has probably read this Site before (at two thirty in the mornin' eating a cold chicken wing). But, I gotta admit this Jimmy Fallon appearance was funny enough to make me vote for 'im in November:

Wonder how long till the pounds start falling off? Watch him be the only guy ever who the surgery doesn't work for.

He was about 5'7" and weighed 428 lbx. He dropped about 125 pretty fast. I can't tell if he still weighs around 300 or not. I know he doesn't weigh much less.

Next time.

The man LOVE's shrimp cocktail he stood at the raw bar, with a two State Troopers on each side, for at least an hour, eating shrimp cocktail. lol

Lost 150 lbs right away with that.

I'm not sure that my neighbors appreciated my outta tune guitar at the end of the night, but Brother Eddy is a better Bass player than he is a fisherman. . . . . Maybe that helped 'em out in enduring it?

Some folks just are blessed with the good genes. My 84 year old aunt looks better than many a 50 year old – beautiful skin and all.

And I'm always offered the student discount at museums.

Last week, a waiter asked his wife if her "son" wanted a refill on his Coke (he was busy on his phone).

I'm 36. DH, who is about to turn 40 and has teenaged daughters, is often mistaken for their brother or boyfriend (shudder) - damn him and his babyface! I am really going to have to work at the anti-aging thing as we get older - he was already mistaken as the son of a friend his age, and I will definitely have to kill myself if anyone ever thinks I'M his mother!!!!!!

When I'm out with him, I get carded constantly. If he's not with me, never carded.

When mangator (at 4.5 years older than me) wears a cap to cover the thinning hair, he looks way younger. Then I even the field by having poisonous weird stuff injected into my face and being 5'2" and 5'5" we all get carded.

Congratulations on being interested in food at such a young age. When I was 12 or 13 the only interest I had was making pancakes on Saturday mornings with my older brother and two of our friends who were also brothers. My mom used to ask us why we didn't sometimes do this activity at our friends' house. Their mom would not let us.

One of the things that has impressed me about you, GOTW, is that you write so well while knowing when to use good grammar and when/how to slang it up. Good show! And until you answered this thread I assumed you to be at least a decade older. Stay with us. We NEED you!

She " how is that you insist that kichen be spotless and you room looks like the east end of a hobo village?" I told her because A clean kitchen is important.and I really only have time for one thing...She would have taken the computer too but I am doing an online college course.Annnyway the point. As my parents sayFind the good and praise it.. A tidy room? I really didnt get my phone taken becuse my room wasnt clean. I got it taken becaue she asked me four times to pick up the laundry and get it started. So I was disrespectful and disobdient. but hey I dont object to a penpal check my profile..just be warned my electronic comunication is heavily monitorited.

Seeing the company you are keeping, and my esteemed friend Mr. Z, questioning you regarding your mom and Woodstock, just left me shaking my head. Thus, the poor poor girl comment. :-)

I am president of toast masters, on the cheerleading squad, stage at uchiko, run my own catering company, and voulenteer at the food bank. my parents love and support me in everthing I do and there is no need to shake your head.

Just sometimes, it might be awkwardly worded. You gotta learn to read the voices between the letters. Not all of us speak the same. It's not just the words. If you need to, step back and reread any post and think, what's the best interpretation of what I read.

Just saying that when the old dogs howl, what comes out isn't always fit for polite company. You appear to be a nice young southern girl from a privileged background who is used to polite company . Most old dawgs are less refined. That's all.

My point was there are city decency codes that say there is. I was not implying I was a shinking violet who had never heard such words. But I have been brought to believe those words have a time and a place and shouting them across a table at a nice meal isnt one of them. Once again Context is the key.
