Toys 'R' Us Banner Ad Causing Issues on iPhone

k
kathryn May 27, 2013 10:32 PM

When viewing any page via iPhone, if the Toys 'r' Us banner ad is at the top of the page, the entire viewable browser area zooms in. I cannot pinch or zoom out, either. The site is basically unusable unless I hit refresh. The issue is resolved as soon as a different ad loads. However this causes me to lose my place regarding unread posts.

The issue persists after clearing history & cookies, and logging back in. This is on iOS 6.1.3.

I had the same problem but with another ad this morning.

It may not be a complete solution, but you could consider using Adblock for Ios, which is similar in functionality to the versions available for other platforms.

Very good observation, I too have been having a "zoom" problem, however didn't associate it to any particular banner ad. I just assumed my I-phone was acting I-phlakey, which it likes to do from time to time.

This seemed to have gone away yesterday, but now it's back. It's a lot of ads, not just toys r us.

Is anyone seeing this on Android, or just on iOS?

I get it on IoS, but only using safari, not chrome.

Seen it on Android. Sometimes there's not even an ad. The first thread on the main page is in huge font and there's no way to unzoom it.

We are unable to reproduce this on our end in iOS 6.1.3 using Safari (or in Android). Anyone using a different version of iOS or a different browser?

Issues related to ads are often out of our control, but we'll keep an eye on this. Thanks for the reports.

I'm still on iOS 5 using Safari and had the issue. But none today.

I cleared my cookies and cache, visited Chow.com, and got the bug again, a few minutes ago. But then it seems to go away after I sign in?

It's still happening to me. Definately related to the ad.

                      1. Melanie Wong Jun 4, 2013 12:18 PM

Today's ad triggers were dog walkers and plumbing supply for toilets. Or at least that's as much as I could tell from the visible fragment of the banner.

I don't need to clear cache for the screen to right size. Just navigate to another page.

Hitting refresh until I get a different banner makes it go away for the page I'm viewing.

BUT this also makes the site mark all comments in a thread as read. So I end up opening up the entire thread again to see what's new. Eventually I give up, on some long threads.

I've stopped viewing CH on mobile basically because this is so irritating.

                        2. DeborahL Jun 5, 2013 10:12 AM

This issue appears to have been related to the specific ad(s). The Toys R Us ad has been pulled from the site, so should no longer cause a problem. If you continue to experience issues, could you report what specific ad was on the page and include a screen shot?

                          Thank you!

Ok I had this happen again yesterday, when I was on my categories page, however when I tried to scroll to the top of the screen, I couldn't find a banner add at all?!?!

Now mind you, I am as tech savvy as a one armed man is efficient at hanging wall paper. I did attempt to scroll to the top of the page (navigating or scrolling or moving the page is difficult when it's blown up) but when I did get to the top of the page I failed to find any banner add.

                                    Don't know if this helps..........

I think it's a YP.com ad, since when I tapped on mine, it showed a restaurant in my area.

And what's worse is when it happen on a really long thread like WFD. When you refresh it thinks you have read all the new posts, there is no way to undo that and then I have to open ALL the posts to find the new ones.....very aggravating.
