Trendee Chinese Cuisine on Overlea

bobinken May 27, 2013 03:03 PM

Anyone been here yet?

I picked up a menu...looks interesting...some items seem a little pricey compared to Congee Queen and Congee Star although they have a number of items that are different than the other two places mentioned. They deliver.

Trendee Chinese Cuisine
62-66 Overlea
Unit 10

Went there tonight and it was pretty good. Menu is as extensive as Congee Queen with some different items and the place was cleaner. We had the Peking Duck ($23.80 Mon -Thurs, 2 courses). Second course is just chopped duck. If you want the lettuce wraps, it's an extra $6 but well worth it. The second course of duck was the best we've ever tasted. The pancakes were good and they did not skimp on the spring onion, cucumber or sauce. For once there was no polite rationing needed. For every $15 of food you order, you can order one of 6 dishes for $6.99 (not counting existing specials, so the duck didn't count (it being Monday) but the extra charge for the lettuce wraps did...need a flowchart). We ordered the garlic chicken. It was moist and very flavourful. We also ordered the kimchi beef fried rice. That was a bit disappointing, not enough kim chi flavour so it ended just being an ok beef fried rice. Free dessert so, on balance, it ended up costing around the same as the "Congees".

Just returned home from an early dinner at Trendee Chinese Cuisine on Overlea and everything was delicious. My husband and I really enjoyed their seafood pumpkin soup. (and everything else we ordered) The prices might be a little bit higher than the "Congee" places but I think the food is superior and the presentation is lovely....the staff are so helpful and efficient and very very nice. We will definitely return...we want to try the Peking Duck next time.
I was told if you call 24 hours ahead they would prepare some dishes for you that might not be on the menu.

Just found out that Trendee Chinese Cuisine is owned by a former owner of Congee Star.

Trendee no more? Went by there tonight for dinner. Lights were off inside even though the sign was still lit up. Chairs were stacked, tables folded and tv's were gone. Too bad.

I guess that's what happens when you're 'trendee'. Here today, gone tomorrow.

Was it in the former Burger King location? That place seems to be bad luck for restaurants.

Just a really poor location for chinese food. The predominant population in the area is Muslim.

There's another possible reason for why Trendee went into the dumper - strong competition from Faley Restaurant, a Hakka Indian Chinese joint at the other end of the very same strip plaza. Following an encouraging tip on Chowhound, I checked Faley out a few months ago - I'm a sucker for mid-level Chinese, which is what Faley essentially is - and found it pretty damn tasty. Respectable prices, too. And it was busy, both with sit-ins and take-outs. The locals presumably preferred it to Trendee. I never did get around to Trendee, and now I guess I never will.

I believe the main reason for their failure is that Trendee was not truly Halal. (they offered some Halal but still served pork on the premises) I found that many of their dishes were over priced for the area.
Also the food became very inconsistent in taste.
My husband and I used to go to Trendee quite often and noticed the difference in taste.

Faley IS Halal and is quite busy.

I agree about Faley....we go there often and love their food ...it is VERY tasty and the owners are great people...service is very good....love their crispy beef and many of their fish dishes.

I went inside Trendee to grab a menu, and it's actually nicely designed - vastly different then the ghetto Burger King and Mainsha restaurant from its past life. So kudos to them for changing around what I really thought was a hopeless space.

I went inside here after dining at Afghan Express (the old Raby's). Afghan Express is really good btw, better than Bamiyan IMO.

I looked at the menu but passed. So can't help. It's only just opened.

Not the classiest name, to be sure, but it doesn't rival this one:

                  Hung Long Restaurant

                  1122 Wilson Avenue
                  Toronto, ON M3M1G7
