  1. I've never been, but I've read and heard a lot of good things about the Tops Diner.

    1. Tops Diner is good, but if you have a car, you should head across the river to the Ironbound section of Newark - Portuguese, Spanish, and Brazilian food abounds! If you do a search on this board for Ironbound you'll find tons of details, but here are a few of my favorite spots:

These two places share a big parking lot:

      -Seabra's Marisqueira http://www.njdiningguide.net/Seabras
(do NOT let the pics on this page fool you--the hometown crowd eating here comes after work shifts on up through dressed up on a Saturday night

      )

-Adega Grill www.adegagrill.com (more upscale decor

      )

-Casa Vasca www.casavascarestaurant.com for legit Basque food - and their own parking lot

Parking isn't impossible in the Ironbound--it's just easier to pull in to a lot!

In Harrison is Spanish Pavilion, which I haven't been to in far too long but it's been there for over 40 years and their food was always very good. I just think the vibe of the Ironbound is fun and interesting...

Spanish Pavilion was featured on that Gordon Ramsay show, Kitchen Nightmares in 2011 and a lot of changes were made. The restaurant is still owned by the founding family, but it bears little resemblance to the restaurant you or I remember. I like the Fernandez brothers, so I won't say anything bad about the restaurant. Just be advised that Michael has apparently left the restaurant (he was the chef) "to pursue another business venture".

Hey, Curlz, thanks for reminding me about Seabra's. I haven't been there since the "m" and the "g" were both still lowercase. We made an adventure out of the train rides and my beautiful wife's introduction to Portuguese food. Best meal in a restaurant I've had since ChefMd left Trinity. I think I'm still kinda full.

Ironbound section of Newark. Curlz posted the website above. It's a solid spot!

So glad you enjoyed it! Love that spot. :-)

The symphony is at NJPAC on Sunday. We're actually thinkin' of goin' back. This time, however, I think I'll skip the Clams Casino appetizer before that massive plate of "seafood for two". It's a shit move to take a doggy bag of leftover mussels on the train home (although, I'm guessin' it'll keep anyone from wantin' to sit near us).

                As always, hat's off.

          1. I actually had to Google "Red Bull Arena". I had never heard of it or knew where it was. What happened to the Cosmos?

I have eaten at Seabra's and will agree with Curlz about that.

The Cosmos and the league (NASL) folded like 30 yrs ago.
The current soccer league is Major League Soccer and the team is New York Red Bulls.

To keep this food related, I read somewhere before that they serve empanadas in the Red Bull Arena.

              1. re: yCf

yC, I was mostly makin' fun of myself. I know the league closed years ago. I once got to tend goal, at eight years old, in Giants Stadium before Cosmos a game. Hell, Franz Beckenbauer signed a ball. That, however, was the last time I ever played soccer. Frankly, that was probably the last time I knew anything about the sport.

In my ignorance, I had no idea that there was a professional league or a team in NJ. I was thinkin' the Red Bull Arena was the new name for some minor league baseball team's stadium. Laugh at me if you want - that was the point.

But, given the location of the Stadium, Newark would be this 'hounds choice for chow.

                1. re: MGZ

"Laugh at me if you want -" Hahahahahahahah-----hahahahahaha------hahahahahaha........

Thank you I enjoyed that. Give me your address I have an old Pele' trading card I'll send you for your birthday!

Now that I got that out of my system, it's a hell of a good looking arena from the outside, however I have never been inside of it just passing on my wait to-and-fro.

I concur, Newark is the most convenient destination from the arena for good eats. Let's say Fernandes......the original.

                    “Let's say Fernandes......the original.”

Fantastic call. I was twenty-two, a year or so outta college, livin’ in Lavallette, and takin’ the train at sunup from Bay Head to Newark the last time I ate there.

I’m glad I got you a chuckle. . . . That’s why they keep me around here, you know.

By the way, did they really name a sports team after an energy drink?

                    1. re: MGZ

Just want to make sure my mom is getting her monies worth. ;-)

I don't believe the stadium was "named after" as much as Red Bull sponsors the team/stadium.

                      1. re: jrvedivici

You will be glad to know that I have agreed to terminate Mom's payments come the First of October. After that, it's just gonna be for sport, my friend.

                2. re: yCf
