Board specific search is gone

Melanie Wong May 23, 2013 07:55 PM

The search box in the upper right corner of the page now only offers choice of Entire Site, Chowhound, etc. and not a specific board. Previously, if you were on the Site Talk board, the search box would search specifically on the Site Talk board. You need to bring back that quick search ability without having to toggle to select Chowhound nor to go to Advanced Search to select a board.

Playing with it some more, the search results are messed up. If I select Chowhound, in one example, I got 645 results. Then when I toggle to ALL (View Results in) from Chowhound, I get -0-. Shouldn't ALL at least have the same number of results if not more?

Hey MW-- when I use the search bar, I am still offered the Advanced Search option, which does have the choice of selecting a specific board-- but only AFTER I search and then select just Chowhound.

Right, that's what I tried to say in my original post when I referred to using Advanced Search to select a board. Previously management had told us that the default for the search box was the specific board as a starting point because the assumption was the reader wanted information for the board he/she was currently on.

This is not a change for the better.

Agree. Much easier previously that the top level search was the board you're currently on.

Having to go through this alternate scenario that Engineering describes is not my cup of tea.

I use the search engine every day and this change is severely cramping my style.

This wasn't a deliberate change, just a bug. Engineering has a problem ticket open on this, and they'll work on fixing it.

Thanks for reporting this. I'll check back in if there are any further updates before it gets fixed.

Whew, that's a relief. The boards are almost useless to me (and I'm sure many others) until that's fixed, so I'm really glad to hear it's being worked on. I was really worried when I saw that.

Google's a useful workaround when search is broken. Use the site:chow.com option to limit it to this site and the intitle: option to find topics on a certain board. For example:

        intitle:burrito intitle:francisco site:chow.com

will find topics on the SF Bay Area board with "burrito" in the title. This search:

        "best burrito" intitle:francisco site:chow.com

will find topics on the SF board with the phrase "best burrito" in at least one post.
