Next Food Network Star

New season starts June 2nd. What happened to last season's winner and his show? Did I blink and miss it?

          Agreed, these are pretty awful. Although it was kind of fun to see some local doughnut people in the stupid showdown (Chez Boris & Leche Desserts).

          Sandwich King is just not for me. The first time I watched it, I got up halfway through to rearrange my coat closet.

            Aw, I like the Sandwich King! Though Cupcake Wars is a whole other story..

          Don't watch it then. Wife and I enjoy it unwinding after a long workday.

            So true. All of these clowns have been on the hunt to get their mugs on FN with such desperation....sad! The show is a scripted joke.

              Chris Hodgson was on the runner up team from Food Truck Race, Danushka Lysek was on Chopped (and was super annoying there so they'll probably love her on here), Rodney Henry was on both Throwdown and Chopped, Russell Jackson was on Iron Chef, Stacey Poon-Kinney was on one of the few episodes of Restaurant Impossible where the food at the restaurant wasn't the issue, and Viet Pham beat Bobby Flay on Iron Chef.

              I'm wondering if they were running out of actual applicants so they had to go back in the files to see who they could pull out. When I saw that Danushka chick was going to be on it I gagged. I really didn't like her on Chopped. So snotty and pretentious.

                I thought everyone on Chopped appears to be 'snotty and pretentious' - or at least over confident.

                  That has very little to do with who the contestants are. It's the work of the producers. They ask questions, encourage answers and choose sound bites that sound like that.

                    See I think some seem like nice people. She did not. I think it's her voice. She is good on camera but I don't think people will like her. They have to pick someone that people can relate to (that's why Melissa D won I think), and people like Danushka are very much non-relatable.

                        I thought other ladies on the show were more attractive. Might just be her voice/attitude putting me off.

                    While I too did not enjoy Danushka on Chopped (and in general I really like the show) - to me this sounds smart. In the past a number of contestants who seem to have interesting food experiences/ perspectives just aren't very good on camera.

                    I didn't like Danushka on Chopped - but she definitely didn't have any issues being on camera. Maybe it's just my bias growing up a bit shy and awkward - but seeing contestants struggle on camera has always been difficult for me to watch.

                      There does appear to be a finite stable of TV chef/contestants who show up over and over again. I have to wonder if real chefs try to spend that much time in front of cameras instead of in their actual kitchens.

                          If you were talking to me, Pualj, I didn't use that word. Nothing real about reality TV of course. Totally cast, scripted and manipulated for a desired storyline.

                              So I did. Thank you.

                              I just wondered about chefs who spend more time on TV than in the kitchen. We're all human, but if one's attention is on image and airtime rather than cooking ability, it looks from here like the priority is not so much great food.

                        Almost fell off the sofa when I saw Stacey was going to be on FNS. Her restaurant is literally a stones throw from my house, I can walk there.

                        It always had a line out the door for breakfast even before RI showed up, and it still does. Stacey is incredibly nice and very sincere; it'll be interesting (maybe) to see how the producers and edits portray her on the show.

                          Yeah I remember thinking "why are they even on restaurant impossible" since the restaurant looked OK, the food was good etc. But as the show went on it was revealed that they just spent too much money on the restaurant and had too many seniors that just drank coffee. She seems very nice, but, when she was on RI, wasn't she saying how she didn't want to do dinner service because she wanted to spend more time with her family? How is going on NFNS going to help her spend more time with family, especially if she wins? Puzzling.

                            The Trails was (and still is) primarily a breakfast/lunch place. She had tried dinner service before RI but it really missed the mark. The food itself was not the problem so much as some of the menu combinations were odd and sometimes the food was cold coming out of the kitchen. RI had her start doing dinner 3 mights a week (Th-Sa) and that worked. She added Wednesday and is only open for dinner 4 nights a week, and that's about right for the neighborhood. Dinner is still not the focus and she is rarely there for dinner service any more.

                            Rumor has it that she grossed $1 million recently and was able to pay her dad back for what he put into the place. The decor is holding up reasonably well, but is starting to show the wear and she'll need to sink some $$$ back into sprucing it up sometime soon.

                            The Trails was doing gluten-free LONG before it became popular. I wonder how much of that she will bring out on the show.

                              I could see her basing an entire show around gluten-free cooking. There's definitely a market for it these days.

                                Yeah, I kind of think her "point of view" will be GF. I'm also wondering if they recruited her for the show because of that.

                            1. All I know is that the show is so fake - Danushka was a joke on Chopped. She gets lamb & basically pairs it w/garlic & rosemary & thinks it's innovative. I make that on a Tuesday night. The first round was worse, when she stared at the basket for the first 17 mins b4 remembering how to cook. FN Star is SO SCRIPTED. It's sad.
