Excellent casual food by Marina? Or hip bar? Fun group from Manhattan... [San Francisco]

Looking for some great food by the Marina district (is this possible?). We're in for one night from NYC before we head to Napa on Friday. We visited recently and enjoyed dining at the St. Regis restaurant Ame and Quince. Both good but would like not to make reservations and keep it good but casual. (Francis looked good, though...) Also interested in recommendations for good cocktail bars, special to SF.

  1. Great food in the Marina is more than possible...

Atelier Crenn (not casual, but exceptional)
    Tipsy Pig
    Umami Burger
and Betelnet (if you like that sort of scene)

Yes, Crenn isn't casual and would likely require a reservation. But worth it.

Great cocktail bars aren't on that side of town.

Thanks for the suggestion! We went to Tipsy Pig and got the mac & cheese, nettle gnocchi, pretzel with beer cheese, fried chicken dishes and a couple of salads. All very good - a nice casual intro to the weekend.

(PS While I liked the mac and cheese, probably more creamy than cheesy for my preferences. Still, I could have liked the skillet ;-)

      2. Agree with Carries suggestions

My fav in that area(more russian hill technically)

Cocotte may be good, but the copy on the front page of their website is hilariously bad.

"Cocotte restaurant merges the timeless essence of the traditional French rotisserie with avant-garde flavors inspired by Califonia’s farm-fresh palate."

I guess my palate is not really farm-fresh.

        2. Really casual - try Tacolicious.

I detest the Palo Alto tacolicious. So many better tacos around at half the price.

Hmm - haven't been there yet - where in the University Ave. area are there better tacos?
