We planted cliantro and it tastes and smells like stinkbug.

There's a hint of cilantro taste, but it is overwhelmingly stinkbug tasting. WTF.

Anybody ever see this? I put in an old pot of dirt which might have a few stinkbugs in it, but the parsley in the same pot tastes right.

  1. Heh... when the stinkbug outbreak started here in New Jersey a couple of years ago, people would say that the stinkbugs smelled like cilantro. So I think nothing is wrong... it's just a matter of the intensity of the flavor.

    1. re: drongo

When I use store bought cilantro it has none of this funk.

    2. Maybe I can make my fortune by selling mashed stinkbugs as an inexpensive replacement for cilantro??

I'm sure my family won't be bothered by my propagating industrial quantities of stinkbugs in my back yard.... :)

      1. Well now I'm concerned. I always buy Vietnamese cilantro, which isn't even related, but they didn't have it at my herb farm and then I accidentally got a cilantro plant instead of a parsley. I will definitely report back later in the season. I do NOT normally like cilantro.

        1. I googled cilantro and stinkbug and got quite a few hits from people who see the similarity. But I hadn't until now...weird.

          1. I read somewhere that cilantro loses its flavour quite quickly after harvesting. Maybe the cilantro you're used to is just not as intense?
