800 Degrees coming to Santa Monica

As I was strolling through the 'hood today, I noticed permit signage on the corner of Wilshire and 2nd. No indication of when it will be open for business.

This will be a nice option for grab-and-go pizza -- it's a short walk to the bluffs to enjoy your slice al fresco while it is still fresh from the oven.

  1. Yes, I heard that as well. Will be nice not to have to go into Westwood when the craving hits.

      1. Will be a gold mine for the owners.

        1. "... it's a short walk to the bluffs to enjoy your slice al fresco while it is still fresh from the oven."

Joe's Pizza already (very adequately) fulfills that need for me on 2nd & Broadway.

Im with ya on that, J.L. besides Neapolitan pies will be lucky to last even a walk to the bluffs...and sorry but the whole idiotic marketing campaign of 800 degrees, make your own pie? i dont get it..no one there asked me to wash my hands and put on an apron...when did anyone ever walk into a pizzeria and let the pizzaiolo decide what to eat?

              1. re: Beachowolfe

Not J.L., and I've only had it once, but to me it was a little disappointing. Everything was kinda bland...

                1. re: TheOffalo

Ordered delivery the other night, resounding "meh". I like NY&C better.

              1. Officially opening next Tuesday the 21st, but I just saw the place fairly packed. Wonder if they're soft-opening or if it's a private party.

Fantastic! I'm equidistant from both 800 deg, but the SM one is easier to access b/c I can just take the bus directly from point A to point B. =) But I assume it'll prob be just as packed as the Westwood one. ::sigh::

                  1. re: ilysla

Went to the Westwood one for the first time a few weeks ago. It was half empty. Granted it was 3 PM...

                    1. re: TheOffalo

UCLA also might've been on break. I fear that, at peak times, the line will be as long as ever. ::sigh:: And the SM one will be super crowded w/ tourists and anyone living/working in the area looking for an inexpensive bite. ::double sigh::

                      1. re: ilysla

True, especially since the only other pizza place in the immediate area is Joe's on Colorado, which is tiny inside

                        1. re: Dirtywextraolives

There is California Pizza Kitchen a literal stone's throw away...

                          1. re: TheOffalo

True. But that's a whole different kind of pizza..... And not very good.

                            1. re: Dirtywextraolives

I actually think CPK is halfway decent, but, if given the choice, 800 Deg wins each time (incl for salads).

                              1. re: ilysla

I actually liked their pizza with the black beans, cheese, salsa with lettuce & ranch, forget what they called it, but the last time I had it, it just wasn't as good as I remembered. Seems like their QC went downhill after it was sold, maybe?

                                1. re: Dirtywextraolives

Were they sold? Wasn't aware of that.... My go-to dish there is usually the cobob salad....

Went to the Westwood 800 Deg today. Delicious, as usual, but I thought the chiles in the special pizza of the day didn't fit the rest of the flavors (tomato sauce, pecorino, guanciale).

                                    1. re: Dirtywextraolives

Meant to add that it's entirely possible; I just normally can't keep track of such things w/ all the other non-chow stuff floating around in my head! ;)

                                      1. re: Dirtywextraolives

On July 7, 2011, CPK was acquired by an affiliate of private equity firm Golden Gate Capital.[

                    1. re: Thor123

When I tried it for the first time a few weeks ago I got the margherita to go, and I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too soggy, based on what I had heard. It traveled pretty well, and a slice even reheated decently the next day.

                    2. Notice how they did not move into The Santa Monica Place yet many vacancies still on their 3rd floor. You would think the mall would fight to have them.

You'd think they could have taken the antica pIzzeria spot...is that still open or did they shutter too? Been a while since I've been up there....

                        1. re: wienermobile

Thanks for the pics. Interesting. It looks so much like the other place. Wonder if both places were modified to have a certain look or if one was more modified than the other.

Good to hear they have a small private space and a to-go area. Makes inexpensive entertaining easier. =)

                          1. re: ilysla

also: There's free parking for 90 minutes with validation in the attached lot.

                        2. the best new pizza on the west side is in MDR at South End, where Mario Vollera and one of the guys from Mozza, chef Frank Fermin, have opened a wine bar/pizzeria! went for the first time friday and it was awesome...a spicy sausage pizza, reminiscent of the Mozza style...though Vollera's background was deep in the traditional neapolitan pizza(he was with Peppe Miele and VPN Antica for years), theyre using a gas oven cranked up to about 650 degrees, they make their own fresh mozz and sausage and it really works..Personally, when Mario told me they were using a gas oven i was kind of shocked. But this pizza was delicious...if i were served it while blind folded, I would swear it came out of a wood burning oven. They have an extensive wine selection and on friday, an Italian brewer was in the house who turned us on to 3 different varieties of ale...perfetto! I cant wait to return. http://www.southendla.com/food

                              2. Just in: The Hollywood 800 Degrees will be at Sunset and Vine at the former famed Schwab's Pharmacy.
The 800 Degrees in Hollywood will be about 3,500 square feet with about 100 seats and a 1,200-square-foot patio. The opening is planned for early 2015. Meanwhile, 800 Degrees also said has secured financing to open up to five New York City locations.
