Tavern on the Square, Westmount

I would like to take a girl friend for supper at Tavern on the Square, Westmount. Is this a good idea or do you have a suggestion for dinner before the play at the Segal Centre, tomorrow night? Thanks

  1. It's not really near the Segal Center at all and there are much better restaurants... why do you want to take her to Tavern on the Square?

    1. That's not such a bad idea. Good place for date. Monkland Taverne closer but busy and loud at night. No real choices on Queen Mary or Decarie other than Lesvos (Good if you like grilled fish) and P.F Chang at Blue Bonnets but right now they are having big service and kitchen issues and one night the food is horrible and other nights it takes you a half hour to get a beer. PF has big problems to work out right now before they can compete in the Montreal restaurant scene. Other credible restaurants in the area are not as good date choices. (eg closest to The Segal is Hoa Hoang on Victoria or Pushap on Pare.Oh BTW I did not put Notre Dame/Griffintown into the equation which changes everything.

      1. Ya Siu is a wonderful Greek restaurant on Queen Mary Rd. and Peking Garden for Chinese.

Unless I ate there on an off night, Ya Siu is terrible and not a patch on Lezvos on Decarie.

In the end, we ate at the café in the Segal Centre, not great, but convenient. But I do appreciate your comments, and it seems that Tavern on the Square is overrated?

            1. re: naturelle

Although I have not been in a while, I have eaten at Tavern on the Square many times and have never been disappointed. I would argue that both the Tavern on the Square and the Monkland Tavern are consistently dependable and often underrated.

              1. re: eat2much

I agree on both "Taverne's" are dependable choices. I would also add that Peking Garden is second rate old school chinese restaurant and the attempts at being more modern (eg General Tao :( ) are mediocre.

                1. re: finefoodie55

General Tao and the like are not their specialties nor do I order dishes commonly available elsewhere. I personally enjoy their Peking duck and moo shu pork amongst other dishes.

As for Yia Sou, IMO it is one of the better restaurants serving greek food in the their calamari and grilled octopus.

                  1. re: RhondaB

peking garden has gotten progressively worse over the years. most of their food has an oily sheen that causes my innards to burn for hours. it used to be much better.

I'm sorry to hear that but it is good to know for future reference. I haven't been in about 5 years as I'm no longer living around the corner but at the time it was the best Chinese in the 'hood', imo. Thanks for the head's up.

I haven't logged on in a while but I will also add my voice that Tavern on the Square (do not know the Monkland) is always reliable. Not the best in Montreal but good consistency in my opinion, and the staff is great!. Don't know why it gets such a bad rap, the clientele perhaps? ;)

              3. re: eat2much

I don't think we've ever had a bad meal at Yia Sou. Its too bad you didn't enjoy yourself.
