London - Great fish dishes at Geales, Notting Hill

Geales' been around for quite a while, changed hands/chefs thru the years, but always retained its approach: good quality seafood, simple no-fuss cookery. Dinner last night:

- Taramasalata dip with thick wedges of brown bread

- Dressed Cornish crab - this was absolutely ambrosial. I'd not had a dressed crab dish I enjoyed this much since one I had at Bibendum, and that was nearly 2 decades back!

- Grilled entrees of sole and skate: super-fresh, both dishes relied on very fresh, good quality fish, accented merely by melted butter, a squeeze of lemon, some capers here & there. Which goes to show - if you have superior quality produce, you *don't* need complicated sauces to cover them up with.

- Geales Classic PieTanic: a bit on the heavy side here.

- Steamed Green Veg (long beans, broccoli, peas), Minted peas

Enjoyed this meal tremendously, in fact infinitely much more than the fussy Michelin-starred fiasco at Benares the previous evening (, but that's another story.

  1. I find it hard not to eat fish and chips when I go there -- the other food looks great too.

They have another location on Chelsea Green which I haven't tried as my wife is fish adverse and there are only so many mediocre rib-eye steaks I can force her to eat....

Oh yes, I regret not ordering the fish-and-chips. The couple on the table next to us both ordered that - huge foot-long fillets of fish - we could hear the crunch when they cut thru the crusty batter! Mouthwatering!

    2. I have been to Geales many times, and on the upcoming trip, I apparently need to try something other than the fish and chips, love these ideas. But of course with a variety of fish to choose from, the f & c is irresistible, case in point pictured.

Mushy peas are the only thing missing from that plate.

.....and the rest of the fish....or is this a children's meal...?

Bigger than it looks, I guess! Couldn't finish it.

If so, then those are fucking enormous chips. :-0

How about this piece of haddock then? My dad couldn't quite finish it.

I finished the Pietanic, every last scrap, and regretted it!

Service was terrible, ladies loo similar.

Yep. That's a proper portion of fish.

      2. When I was a kid we lived a short walk from Geales. Whenever I go back it is a prime candidate for another meal.
