New Santa Fe Coffeehouses: Capitol Coffee Company, Palace Coffee and Tea

Well, neither one will become my new go-to coffeehouse in town, but interesting additions to the city:

Capitol Coffee Company - in the former Ohori's space a few doors down from Kaune's. Coffee beans are from Desert Sun in Durango, including a couple of custom blends. Quite decent drip coffee, they have both a light and a dark roast, as well as a decaf. I was pleased that the light roast actually had enough body, I'm repeatedly amazed how many places screw up perfectly good city roast or city+ coffee by using too little coffee or too short an extraction. Espresso was a little more meh, but serviceable, their machine isn't anything super great, nor is their craft. Locally sourced edibles from Chocolate Maven (boooo) and Senor Murphy's (polite golf clap). Nice, clean, slightly antiseptic space in which to sit. Friendly folks running the place, clearly making an effort to get to know their clientele.

Palace Coffee - cute digs, meh chow. NE corner of Palace and Grant, on the second floor, they have a tiny indoor space and a lovely patio. I got my hopes up when I saw they used Seattle's excellent Caffe D'Arte coffee just like the excellent Holy Spirit a block away, but they just don't know what to do with it. Middling-at-best espresso craft out of a small, low-grade machine, blah baked goods.

My Santa Fe go-to's will continue to be Holy Spirit and Betterday on the top tier, followed by Collected Works and Downtown Subscription when the right people are working.
