Thursday 5/16 - Looking for a spot with excellent food, but also one willing/able to turn on the Kings game

uhockey May 14, 2013 05:59 AM

Doesn't need to be a sports bar (would prefer not, actually.) Any form of cuisine will do as long as it is good. Probably something along the lines of a gastro-pub would be best, but not being too picky here.

Actually went to Barleymash and had a great time; my 33yo self, my 63yo mom, and my 58yo aunt amongst all the *expected* gaslamp population. Thankfully there were a LOT of Kings fans there and the food was actually pretty good - the duck hushpuppies, pretzels and dips, s'mores, and apple donuts were a nice end to the day....and yeah, 2 goals in 22 seconds - not bad at all.

Glad you had a good time with Mom and Auntie too..
Are you still in PHX as a surgeon?
Haven't seen you much on the PHX board.

I am a doctor. Just not a Surgeon. My blog title gives away a lot.

Overall I had a great visit to San Diego and reviews will creep out slowly.

              Spots visited include:
Donut Bar, Café Chloe, Hodad's, Brockton Villa, Georges at the Cove TBL3, The Cottage, Ariccia Market, AR Valentien, Carnita's Snack Shack, El Zarape, Barley Mash, Bread and Cie, Fig Tree Café, Urban Solace, Addison, Tractor Room, Oscar's, and Extraordinary Desserts.

      Hi Mike!
Pizza Port in Ocean Beach is supposed to be a LA Kings fan base.
      Great beer, decent food...new building.

Heads up on OB..60's time warp.

Stout Public House in the Gaslamp are rabid hockey fans.
      Happy Hour daily 4-8pm.

Fish tacos, gobernador and the Marlyn tacos are fab at the Mariscos German truck.

Just got back from AZ..103 degrees...should be a lot cooler in SD.
      Go Kings!

Brooklyn girl (mission hills) had hockey on last night without sound at the bar. Food can be excellent or meh, but drinks are tasty.

          El Chevere May 16, 2013 02:19 PM

Good call re: Stout House....forgot about that place.

Most importantly, you need to tell us where you are staying and if you will have a car.

If you are staying downtown, you could probably get a steakhouse such as Mortons (though not a fan--especially since they are now owned by Landry's) or Donovans.....you might also be able to persuade the bartender at The Grant Grill--though they only have one large TV and I you did not specify whether volume was important to you.

in Coronado, I would highly recommend Leroy's Kitchen and Lounge. In La Jolla, I would highly recommend Amaya (bar area--not the fancy, shmancy dining room) ahd their large TV's.

Again, would help if we knew where you were staying

            Have Car, Will Travel.

Likely will just grab fish tacos somewhere and head to the hotel.

            Will look into Leroys, though.

If you go for the fish taco you should go for one of the Marisco trucks and order some of their tacos, e.g. smoked marlin, gobernador

Hmm....Rarely would I recommend a Gaslamp Quarter restaurant, but Barley Mash has decent food and about a million televisions. 5th and Market, so plan for parking hell.

There are multiple parking garages on 6th so that it is rarely difficult to park in the Gaslamp (even on weekends)

True! Or the lots. I've had decent luck with the small lots.

The overlap between excellent food and ESPN will be small or non existent. If the Kings have higher priority you will have to go for average (or below average) food

                The game isn't on ESPN.

But that raises a good point, you probably will need to go to a sports bar of some sort as most places that have basic Cox or TW cable may not have NBC Sport Network channel, which is where the game is airing.

Regal Beagle, esp. if you like beer. Eat at the bar and the beertender will be more than happy to put on the Kings game for you.

Also, Asmara (Ethiopian place) has a TV, and they have it on ESPN sometimes, but dunno if they'll tune the channel to the Kings, but if you ask ...
