Fresh herring?

Guido May 13, 2013 04:35 PM

Does anyone know where to buy fresh herring in Boston/Cambridge/North? I went to Fresh Pond Seafood today and they say they never carry it. I want to try pickling my own, so buying it salted, or already pickled, defeats the purpose.

call New Deal or Court House; they have the largest variety of seafood.

I have tried New Deal, Courthouse, whole foods, H-mart & Market Basket, Fresh Pond, Globe Fish and Stavis. Nobody has fresh herring.

Any hounds out there with knowledge of ethnic markets that might carry them? Or know any fishermen?

They may bring it in for Christmas Eve, it is a common part of a 7 fishes meal. Fish markets down in New Bedford/Fall River might also be a better bet.

I live in California (SF Bay Area), our herring season is ~Dec - Feb.

The Atlantic herring season is quite different - it appears to be nearly year-round.

You might try calling some of the local Russian stores, like Bazaar or Berezka. They all have freshly marinated herring, and while I don't know for sure whether they make it themselves or bring it in, they might know a source for fresh.
