Need Dallas reccomendations for visit

I will be in dallas to catch a cowboy game in december. We are staying in plano. However, we will travel for great food (30-45 min). Where is the best bbq in the dallas area, as well as anything else thats very notable. I've been to Kruez's in lockhart, but from what I heard, nothing is comparable around dallas?Any help is greatly appreciated.

    1. I always make a point to visit Ojeda's on Maple Ave. for some excellent Mexican food. And their top shelfs rock.

The Sonny Bryan's on Mockingbird is good for BBQ, but I am not sure of their hours on the weekend.

Both of these places are in the Love Field area and not far from the stadium.

        1. Scott, since your food interests seem open ended other than BBQ, you should hit www.wfaa.com and follow the links to the Dallas Morning News Weekend Guide. The Guide reviews every restaurant in town and is reasonably reliable. If something catches your eye come back to the board for specific opinions. Otherwise, us Dallas chowhounds wouldn't know where to start. Sonny's is an institution and Ojedas, while good texmex, wouldn't be the "one" place I would go if visiting Dallas. Check the Guide and see if it helps.

Don't you think refering people to a TV station web site defeats the purpose of Chowhounds.com?

Not really. With as many great restaurants as Dallas has it is just a wild guess to recommend something to someone who doesn't specify cuisine interests or prices. With a little more focus to the request the Dallas based chowhounders can then really swing in to action. The website was just a starting place, chowhound was the end point. If you only know a few Dallas restaurants, as you seem to, it's easy to recommend what you know. If you live here it's a more complex question.

I will be in dallas for a weekend. so figure 2 dinners and a lunch. I want one to be bbq, and the others to be something great and unique that I don't get in New York City. We eat everything. I just want the can't miss places. greasy, really cheap, hole in the wall, it don't matter. It's all about the food.

                      1. re: Scott K

I'm not good at "can't miss" places. For food you can't get in New York think Tex Mex. Ojedas in Plano is good Tex Mex. You said you are staying here. Perhaps it would be convenient for you.

                          1. re: Plano Rose

On second thought. Let's add some kick back atmosphere. La Hacienda Ranch on Preston Road north of Plano and south of Frisco. We take lots of folks there. Pure Texana and good food.

                        • If you're interested in anything besides bbq or Tex-Mex, I would offer the following suggestions: Abacus - upscale southwestern fusion cooking by recent James Beard Award nominee, Matt's No Place - Texas style game cooking in a low key atmosphere, York Street - daily menu changes based on what the chef thinks is best that day (in the style of Chez Pannise in Berkeley) and Lola - very good food and the best wine list in town. Matt's is where they took Julia Child last time she was in town. All would probably require reservations. Enjoy your visit.

                            1. Tex-Mex: Mia's or El Fenix (since 1925) for cheap but good cheese enchiladas.
                              BBQ: Sonny Bryan's

                                1. Sonny Bryan's original location ONLY. There are many others in the metroplex, but the store on Inwood is their best.

                                    1. re: Jim

I was disappointed in Sonny Bryan's. I think Pearson's in Jackson Heights, Queens is better. (Having spent half my life in Texas, I was surprised by this, but Pearson's is damn good!)
