Lobster Roll in Swampscott or Marblehead

My mom and I are headed out to Swampscott today and would like to get a lobster roll for lunch, either in Swampscott or Marblehead. Location isn't as important as quality and we're happy to get it to go and eat outdoors. Also, we're very familiar with the area, so please feel free to send us off the beaten path. Neighboring Salem would be fine, too.

  1. I like the lobster rolls at The Barnacle in Marblehead.

In Salem..the Lobster Shanty has great lobster rolls.

    1. My thought, not worth the paper it is not written on.

Stop at every shack you come across. Share. Please let us know which ones you prefer and why.

      1. The Landing in Marblehead also has fantastic lobster rolls and a great view of the harbor. As for take out, I've heard raves about the ones from the Muffin Shop on Washington Street in Marblehead.

I'm a fan of the lobster roll at the Muffin Shop.

Eat it in nearby Crocker Park or on the benches by the Town/Fishing dock. Fort Sewall is pretty too but a little longer walk.

My wife had one from the Muffin Shop recently and while very fresh it was loaded with shell.

        2. The landing and barnacle have been in Marblehead for a long time. They go back to the Bill Penny days.
Both are good but the barnacle can be organization by chaos at times.
The landing has the view and has structure within its management.

The lobster salad at the Landing is very good.

          2. We went to the Barnacle, a place I've been several times, but probably not in the past two years. The lobster roll was disappointing--the lobster was a bit waterlogged and not terribly flavorful. The construction, bottom to top, was a roll that may or not have been toasted, splayed out on the plate underneath piece of lettuce. It's possible the roll was toasted but it definitely wasn't buttered. This was knife-and-fork fare because it wasn't possible to pick up the sandwich the way it was presented. The lobster is undressed but served with a dollop of mayo and some diced celery on top. The service was indifferent, which is better than the incompetence I've experienced on other visits. Sounds like the Landing might be worth checking out on a future visit.

The last time I went to the barnacle, a non employee friend of the bartender, took our order. She messed up everything but the food was good.
Too bad about your lobster roll.

Wow..sorry to hear that! When did you go? This doesn't sound at all like the lobster roll I had for lunch there about 8 or 9 months ago. I'll be disappointed if they changed the recipe.

I've only been a few times and have never had indifferent or incompetent service. If I had, I doubt I would return...although I could probably not stay away from their lobster bisque.
I like The Landing as well...I just don't like their lobster roll. I prefer them basic and unseasoned.
