Road trip Chow (dallas tx to santa rosa florida)

  • 5

Taking a road trip to Florida (Santa Rosa) next week. I wanted to check and see if anyone had recommendations on any spots that are worth stopping for? To or from we will be going through N.O. I have plans for there. What areas I am looking for guidance on is:

1. Anything around int. 20 between dallas and jackson ms (in LA i am willing to make significant detours for good LA food)
2. Anything around Jackson ms to hattiesburg ms
3. Anything around hattiesburg to mobile to santa rosa.
4. Anything off 49 and 10 through LA.

We will have a 5 year old with us so but besides that i am open to all suggestions.

  1. I rarely travel the route you are taking except for I-10 East and West. In Mobile I like the seafood places on Battleship Parkway, parallel to I-10 between Mobile and Spanish Fort. Easy on/off and not too far out ouf your way.

I've been to Fred's Seafood Shed the most, but Original Oyster and Felix's are also good. They are all informal and family friendly and have a large seafood selection, mostly fried but grilled too. I haven't been there since late last year but the raw oysters were very good.

      2. The classic on 49 are Lasyone's Meat Pie Kitchen in Natchitoches (for meat pies) and Lea's in LeCompte which is a better-than-average roadside joint, famous for pies. They once made their own hams but I don't think that is true anymore.

If on 10 you might want to check with Hawk's in (kind of) rayne to see if he is still boiling crawfish. Most of the places on 10 have been discussed here many times. You've got a lot of territory there.

thanks hazelhurst these are exactly what i am looking for in LA. I have crawfish barn (north of eunice) on the map already but adding hawks and all your suggestions as well.

I wish i could take a month off and just drive around this part of LA and eat somewhere different everyday.
