James Beard Awards

Happy to see some terrific chefs recognized at the James Beard Awards last night. In particular Top Chef winner Stephanie Izard of Girl & The Goat in Chicago.

My thoughts on Stephanie:

You know - it is interesting to me. This is the first year I've read through the results and really had no feelings about the results.

I've been to a few of the restaurants but wasn't all that impressed with them and most of them I've never heard about (in years past I've at least heard about several or been to a few on business trips but not this year).

The books/blogs/articles I had the same feelings about. Just indifferent.

Maybe I'm just not in the state of mind to really get into them this year or maybe I feel like they missed the mark with some of their awards so I'm discrediting others.

I'm not sure but I was surprised others hadn't commented on them here (or maybe I'm missing another thread) so put in my 2 cents.

Thanks for the feedback Thimes. Apparently the awards didn't generate a lot of interest on this board. Still, I was impressed with GIrl & The Goat, so I was glad for that one.

I was very glad Stephanie won Top Chef her season. I thought she did a great job on the show. I know Girl & The Goat has received a lot of praise, so I'm sure it is well deserved. I have been to a few food festivals where she was serving and I wasn't that impressed with what she was serving - but it is horribly unfair to judge a restaurant by what they can serve at a food event to 300 guests. I'll have to try and get there the next time I'm in town.

Definitely check out Girl & The Goat when you get to Chicago. I'd be interested in what you think.

Anyone else, any thoughts on the James Beard winners?

As once an insider, I know that these are rigged. It all has to do with who has the best PR person, at least in NewYork.

In 2010 a book I translated won in the research category, Encyclopedia of Pasta. The author was practically unknown outside Italy and the publisher was a university press. Believe me, nobody involved had a PR person. I realize between a chef and a scholarly book, there's a world of difference, but such blanket statements are hurtful and potentially damaging to hard-working people who deserved their awards.

I apologize. I was referring to restaurants and chefs in NYC and in no way wished to demean hard working and talented writers.

                Apology accepted. Thank you.
