Desperate for restaurant in the Temple area

My job brings me out to Temple, Texas several days a week and I am desperate to hear about anything noteworthy in the Temple or outlying areas. So far it seems like a never ending series of McDonald's and Chili's. Are there any hole in the wall joints or hidden gems that I am missing? I am willing to drive up to 20 minutes any which way if it means a decent meal. Chowhounds I need your help!

Thanks,
John

If you're REALLY desperate, try Mikeska's BBQ. It is NOT some of the best Central Texas has to offer, but it's better than chain grub...

What about the Stagecoach Inn down in Salado? The food is passable. Had a fair filet at a rehearsal dinner Friday night.

    2. I gotta second Clem Mikeska's-it's the only place I've ever eaten in Temple. But I will say this-he uses sirloin(instead of brisket), and I really liked that. It was quite tender, and the smoked turkey was pretty good. His sauce was a little bland, but then I didn't think it really needed any sauce.

      1. One of the nicest little cafes in Texas. Perfect fried chicken -- decent CFS and catfish -- and the plate lunches are so big, they come on two plates.

It's at 705 S 25th -- right behind the Scott & White Santa Fe Hospital -- the old red one near the railroad, about 5-6 blocks east of I-35.

Also, Schoepf's BBQ in Belton is worth the drive.
