de Mello Palheta Coffee Roasters - Yonge/Eglington area
A friend sent out a mass e-mail the other day about this place and said it was some of the best coffee she has ever had. Thinking about dropping by when in the area but wasn't sure if it was worthy of a post since I hadn't experienced it myself.
However, there is now a blogTO post on it and now I am curious if any CHers have been?
They roast their beans in house.
Interesting brewing equipment too!
EDIT - Links to website and facebook:
I think you'd find that the place is pretty laid-back. I have been only once, and while I'm no coffee aficionado, I do love a good brew. I had the siphon-method coffee (Sumatra, I believe). It was quite a process and the finished product was quite tasty. It was served in a glass, and the expectation was to drink it without adding milk, but you could have fixed it any way you wished.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned that the baking is all done in-house by a baker who was on-site when we were there. She was more than happy to explain the many choices of baked goods (scones, muffins, cookies, loaves, etc.). I had a ginger cookie which was dark, partly crisp and partly chewy and tasting of fresh ginger...very good.
The atmosphere is relaxed and they are more than happy to discuss/describe anything about the coffees etc.
I believe that they roast twice a week, something like Tuesday and Friday.
i've also been once, and concur w/yongeman's sentiments. a great addition to midtown. they clearly take their coffee seriously, the baked goods are legit -- not the barely-one-step-above-sysco stuff you get in most cafes -- and the space is nicely appointed. i do wish, however, that they would keep the music down and more suited to a relaxed ambiance -- being blasted out by shaft & other 70's hits was a bit disconcerting.
I strolled over earlier today.
Really like what they've done with the place and they're really friendly.
Had a double espresso, comes with a nice little biscotti. Owner came over and chatted for a bit - asked me if I honestly liked the coffee which I did. Nice balance - good levels of acidity.
I'll definitely be back!
Damn it, I was just in this area last night too. Will definitely check this place out next time I'm in the area.
We have been blessed with a pretty good coffee scene in TO, and it's always welcome when somebody steps up the game a notch.
My current #1 is still Fahrenheit for the record.
