Saw my first morel this past weekend! Hope to get out hunting this weekend.

Awesome! I actually meant wild and outdoors, but I can see I wasn't clear.

how great - good hunting. my memory is that they grow well around apple trees but it's been years since I've foraged.

I find them around downed elm trees.

I spotted some in Haverhill on the trail that goes around Kenoza Lake. They were still a little small but they should be ready for picking this weekend.

I'm hoping to walk out of there with about 15 to 20 of them this weekend.

Not if I beat you to them! Just kidding, I think you're the first mushroom hunter I know of who's ever disclosed a precious hunting ground (most seem to be rather Gollum-like). I will now share a prime maitake location: behind the carwash on route 9 in Natick. At the base of the big tree there is a maitake the size of a truck tire in the fall. Might be not be well "seasoned," though I did eat a clean looking chunk of it one year.

There a spot on my lawn where one sad little morel comes up some years, so I'll have to check it.

There are plenty of them if you know where to look.

I noticed over a dozen of them the one spot I looked at last weekend and that wasn't even my regular spot.

I just got a tip today too.... in the woods off one of the holes at Far Corners Golf Course in Boxford there were dozens of them.

I found some one year in the mulch along the row houses on Beacon t opposite the Commons. But watch out for doggy do....

Just for those who aren't in the know there is a false morel which is poisonous or will at least make some people sick. Please know what you are picking.
