O. Tofu House in Granada Hills: I like it
My experience with Koreatown BBQ is limited in the extreme, beyond a few visits to Soot Bul Jeep. And in Granada Hills, where I reside, I have yet to even sample the Shik Do Rak outpost there.
So when the O. Tofu House opened up less than a mile from my home, I decided to give them a try. I was especially interested in trying Soon Tofu for the first time. I'm really glad I went.
They have about a dozen ala carte versions of the Soon Tofu soup in the bubbling personal cauldrens. And about as many ala carte grilled meats/onions and seafood. You can get a combination dinner matching any soup with any meat, which is what I did. BTW, this is not a cook-it-yourself on a table grill kind of place. All the cooking takes place in the kitchen, which is fine by me.
About 7 banchan come out to the table (napa kimchi, seaweed kimchi, eggplant jelly, marinated bean sprouts, pickled ginger, etc) Soon a personal iron pot of steamed rice comes to the table, followed by the soom tofu cauldren. I chose beef and kimchi for my soup, and they give you a very small/cute raw egg to crack into the cauldren. 'medium spicy' was mildly spicy; the tofu, soft and silky
Then out comes a personal iron platter of the main protein, and my choice was spicy grilled pork and onions. More than enough for a medium/average appetite. Spicy and sweet and a bit oily, but I was fine with it.
This combo dinner was about $16 and I had plenty to eat. I'm sure there are plenty of excellent soon tofu specialists elsewhere, but this place was two minutes from my house, with easy parking in the Ralphs parking lot. Location is at Devonshite and Balboa. The yelpers on Yelp complained about slow service, but there was none of that when I was there last night. Will go back tonight, with the wife...
