Deluxe Newton...going downhill fast?
When it opened it was great! A few years ago we frequently recommended it to friends and went there about once a month. Now with 2 bad meals in a row at Deluxe... and annyoyed. Went once in February and it was ok.... meh but not on our 'cut list'. They keep cutting portions skimping on quality ingredients, , and can't figure out how to get the french fries right and are unwilling to give us full size water glasses.
Went there earlier today with some out of town guests,,, and it was so bad that I was embarassed for suggesting the place.
When we pointed out to the waitress that no one liked the french fires, (after complaining a few times hoping for some fresh ones) She suggested that we go the whole in the wall burger joint on the other side of newton centre....and we probably will.
Never ate French Fries there I can't comment.
My standard rotation below have been consistently good.
Chicken livers with quinoa and rice&beans
Vegetarian plates (choose any 4 sides for 9.95 - best deal in town!)
Hash and eggs
Burgers - with sweet fries
Fish and chips - with eggplant fries
Best thing is they have fresh avacados that you can add to almost anything.
Had breakfast there this weekend. I don't think it's as good as the Deluxe Town Diner -- ployes are very different, more like ordinary pancakes, for one thing -- but I like their non-traditional take on corned beef hash. It seems to me exactly what it has been since it opened: very good, consistent, not quite awe-inspiring. Definitely superior to Johnny's Luncheonette across the street. (I also like Lee's Place, the little burger joint.)
re: MC Slim JB
Never been to New Brunswick, and never seen ployes anywhere else, so I have nothing to compare them with, but the Watertown Deluxe version impressed me as tasty and unusual, like crepes with a slightly chewier texture. The Newton Centre version could easily be mistaken for ordinary buttermilk pancakes, very disappointing.
Wow, that's ballsy (and kinda rude) of her to suggest you try some other place (Lee's, which isn't that great, but that's beside the point).
I think their breakfast items are better than their lunch/dinner items. But I still think I like the Watertown original better.
One thing, though, that is amazing, are the eggplant fries.
