Brunchworks Cafe on a coupon X2 - a good place - St Clair and Oakwood
North-east corner of St. Clair and Oakwood,
a large room with a large menu. They have a "plat du jour" if you want a regular meal.
First time: burger, fries, Nathans hot dog with kraut, onion soup, peanut butter cookie
Second time: vegetable pizza, salmon sandwich with Caesar salad, chocolate chip cookie
The owner and his kitchen staff try to do a good and honest job for the customer. With the exception of an occaisional error in judgement- making something too refined- they succeed. The kitchen head (I can't call him the head chef when he is preparing hot dogs) had been the sous-chef at Phoebe's and is still learning about his new format. But it seems that he has lots of desire and aptitude.
Superb: thin cut "dirty" french fries, chocolate chip oatmeal cookie (best I have ever had) , salmon sandwich (remember, cook is a son of Phoebe).
The salmon sandwich came with wasabi mayo. The mayo was mostly lost in the eating. What was really good was putting some of the caesar dressed romaine in it , and pouring onto it some of the extra dressing. The salmon (6oz.) was cooked beautifully.
I don't know whether to rate the pizza as superb because I don't understand the thin crust which was new to me. You may like it a lot.
The burger (8 oz) was good, certainly honest, and better than at many fancy burger places. But I think that it needs a bit of thinking in order to make it luscious.
The only thing that I wouldn't have again is the onion soup. It was made too refined.
