Green Barn Restaurant Methuen MA -Demolished

pinehurst Apr 24, 2013 12:49 PM

A few days ago, the second (and only remaining) German restaurant in Methuen, the Green Barn, is gone....reduced to a pile of bricks and rubble.

Though I didn't enjoy it as much as the Wirtshaus down the street, I am sad to see it go; hope it doesn't become another Wendy's.

Anyone heard about plans for the spot? I believe the owners were (very) elderly, and business/service had been waning.

It's going to be a shopping plaza with a CVS, a bank, and a restaurant.

You know something, I joked to a friend as we drove past "Look at the land they're clearing; just what we need, another strip mall."

      Egads, it's true.

one of those placesI always wondered about as a kid...my parents were never "adventurous" eaters...and I never got back there to try either German restaurant after I moved away.

I had heard this was going to happen a while ago. I haven't been there in a couple of years...but I have some great memories there. It was one of my son's favorite restaurants as a kid.
I agree that the Wirtshaus had much better food..much more authentic German.
An editor friend of mine said he heard the owners were planning on re-opening a smaller place in a different location..but I doubt that happens.
Not much in terms of Germain cuisine around here anymore.

Given the location, the place had a great run for decades. German food is a nitch market.

(Non) update. CVS just about fully constructed; bank about halfway there...and then there is the mystery building. It's good-sized, and I hope that it's neither a chain nor another pizza/donut shop.
