Playa Cabana Dupont - Dinner Recommendations

mnajji Apr 24, 2013 08:50 AM

So four friends and I are finally going to Playa Cabana Dupond for dinner tonight.

It has a huge menu (usually a worrying sign, but everyone raves about this place) so we need some help dicing it down to a few "key" things.

So far from what I've read, the must-gets are:
-Chile Rellenos
-Crispy Chicken Tinga Tacos
-Some mention of an interesting Tequila and Lillet based cocktail in Toronto Life's sparsely helpful review
-"The Burritos" which are supposedly huge and tasty
-The stewed salsa?
-The ceviche, depending on the fish

My specific question about the menu is whether the Crab Bucket is worth it for $19 or just stick to the Shrimp Bucket?

Don't forget the guacamole and chips to start and the churros for dessert.

And I'm so glad that you have the crispy chicken tacos on your list. They're the best chicken tacos I've had anywhere...even better than Grand Electric (shhhh).

Hahaha, actually the reason they were on there was BECAUSE of your suggestion on another thread!

It's all part of the research.

But yeah, dinner was excellent, portions generous. Tacos were definitely on par or better than GE. The burrito meat was EXCELLENTLY seasoned and definitely worth the premium relative to Burrito Boyz (or whoever else). The rellenos were also excellent.

And it's actually great value. I went into it thinking it was kind of pricey.

It's just a shame that you have to either book weeks in advance or for 9pm dinners in order to eat there...

How many dishes per person do you find appropriate?

When I was there, an appetizer, main, and dessert was perfect (maybe even a little much). If you're ordering tacos, they give you the option of whether you want them a la carte or with rice and/or beans. If you get the entree with rice and/or beans, plus the app and dessert, both of which can be shared, you'll walk away very full :)

Yeah exactly. We did not go in armed with this information (somehow, I glossed over portion sizes in my research) and I ordered an app, an order of tacos AND a main dish AND we split a guac at the beginning AND their warm, housemade corn chips are complementary throughout the meal...

It was too much. MUCH too much.

Hey - sounds like some good choices.

I've only been to the Dundas location, but I will weigh in on the Crab v. Shrimp. My bf and I usually have the shrimp - which is amazing, but splurged on the Crab. It was good, but so messy and time consuming, that to be honest I enjoyed the shrimp far more, and not just because of the time spent. The flavours were better in my opinion. My bf felt the same.

I also liked the lobster tacos which are often on special.

Hope this helps and enjoy your meal!

          That is helpful, thank you!

Yeah, I know, crab claws/legs/any part of any crustacean are always a big mess, at least for me... but apparently, East Coast King and Snow crabs are in season as of April (until November)! So if ever there is a time to order crab, it is now.
