The Mistreatment of Bakery Items

Sure, I know there are bigger things to worry about but, it never ceases to amaze me when I visit a bakery and see them tossing baked goods into paper bags instead of packaging them in boxes to protect them.
This weekend I purchased 1/2 dozen iced scones for a brunch only to find the icing smeared all over the bag and other scones when I arrived home. (They didn't have any boxes).
Another bakery that charges a hefty sum for their scones also packages them in brown paper bags. The scones are a crumbly mess when you get them home. (No I don't buy them there any more unless I'm able to eat one in the shop).
mr bc stopped at an Italian bakery a few weeks ago and picked up some mini-pizzas. He said the store had them displayed beautifully on a big wooden platter. Imagine our dismay when we opened the bag to find them squished together and pretty much flattened.
On a recent trip to London I purchased some shortbread cookies at a gourmet shop and they too were tossed into a bag and did NOT travel well back to the hotel.
I just don't get it. If you're taking the time and making the effort to bake something delicious, why not treat the item with respect?
While I usually boycott places that don't care about their packaging, I have started bringing my own container to one place because we really enjoy their scones and can't stand the thought of having them arrive home in a crumbly mess.
Is anyone else noticing this or am I just shopping in the wrong places?
This is a nice post because I was thinking about this very often. Funny thing.... I am the oppose. I shop at lower end bakery stores, and they almost always use bag to save cost -- I think. WhenI buy a lot of bakery goods, then they are put into boxes. The reason I like bags better is because bags seal better and keep the moisture in better.
P.S. I am talking about mostly small breads, but cakes or anything which really require a box.
My pet peeve is putting a wonderful, crusty rye bread into a plastic bag which destroys,the crust. What happened to the wax bags?
If a box is not an option, I ask for a paper plate which has yet to be in short supply at a bakery. top to bottom with paper plates inside the bag, less shifting. Or ask for more than one bag to keep the mixing up from happening too much.
