Farm & Fisherman, Fond, Matyson, Mica or Heirloom?

I'm hoping to secure a reservation for 4 for a surprise birthday dinner at Bibou in late June, but if that fails, any suggestions for how to make a decision between the restaurants listed above? Is there a clear front-runner or is it more of a "can't go wrong" with any of these?

  1. Fond is the clear front-runner, after that I'd say F&F and Matyson are pretty much tied. I wouldn't go to Mica. I haven't been to Heirloom.

    1. We haven't been to F & F or Mica, but both get good reviews.

      Like Fond very much. Warm, friendly atmosphere. Loved their foie gras!

      Was disappointed at Heirloom. Menu looked great, but food was bland, lacked taste. May have been chef's night off.

      Matyson is always good, but think you'd prefer the vibe at Fond.

        Another vote for Fond. Of those you mention, I have not been to F&F, so I can't comment on that. Much prefer Fond to Heirloom, Mica or Matyson.

          I like Matyson a lot, but only if you get the tasting menu, or go for the Sunday special.

          I would suggest that if you are considering Mica, you consider Blackfish instead. Foodwise they are equivalent. Mica is smaller and I find it louder than Blackfish. And Blackfish is BYO to boot.

          Farm and Fisherman is very very good. Again small space. I am not wowed by the food, but I like it best when they have an abundance of fresh ingredients to work with, which means late spring and summer. And it is BYO too. I have not been to Fond since they moved and added a liquor license.

      2. Fond. Quaint atmosphere cheerful staff deep rich food excellent experience.

              Mica
              Farm & Fisherman
              Matyson (weekday tasting menu)
              Fond

              Heirloom (never been)

              Of these, Matyson is the noisiest and has the lest flexible staff, so I probably wouldn't pick it for a birthday party.

              For those who haven't been to Farm & Fisherman, I can't say enough good things about it; they blow me away every time I go. It's up there with Blackfish & Bibou as the best in Philly (in my mind Mica pretty much = Blackfish with a liquor license, although the menus are different)

              In fact, I will be at F&F for the Joncarl Lachman/Noord popup tonight, but that probably doesn't count. (Apparently Noord will be BYOB!)
