please help me out for my next "BBQ Drive" (I've done the whole lockhart/hill country thing).

This trip is West bound I-20 Shreveport to Dallas.

Looking for BBQ or unique Local places.

Along the interstate or adjacent "old roads" or up to 20 miles off of same.

Thanks very much. I always get such good recommendations here!

You should definitely try Country Tavern on the outskirts of Kilgore. They have wonderful Southern style pork ribs. It is in my top 4 rib places (along with Dreamland, Interstate, and Leathas) and has a Texas jutejoint atmosphere. They also have brisket, but I say why bother because if you've done the Hill Country thing then you've no doubt had better. Stick with the ribs and you'll be satisfied. It's on Texas 31 about 5 miles west of Kilgore.

If you have the time and stomach to try two places, at the beginning of the year I was driving through Kilgore on a Sunday and I saw a new barbecue place called Cooper's. As you may know, Cooper's in Llano is a legendary place and there are other Cooper's BBQ in other towns. This place could be a real find, or just a place using a name to draw a crowd.

Make sure you post back with your findings.

There is a place called Piggy's in Murchison, which is just southwest of Tyler on Highway 31. I'd have to look at a map, but I don't feel that Murchison is too far from I-20, but it might exceed your 20 minute limitation (probably 25-30 minutes from the highway). Piggy's has good bbq but is noted for its outstanding pies.

Were I you, I would start my trip with a ham po-boy and a jar of sauce to go at Leon's on King's Highway in Shreveport. Leon's bbq sauce is, for me, the finest bbq sauce on the planet. It's peppery and runny and not sweet. The bbq beef at Leon's is not up to Lockhart/Taylor standard, but they smoke their own ham, which goes into the poboy along with their sauce, some pickles and a wad of cole slaw, making the Leon's Ham Po-Boy one of my favorite sandwiches, anywhere.

I used to eat at Bodacious in Longview. I think they have spread out now and have multiple locations which may not be so good. Used to be excellent though.
