Most romantic restaurant in NYC?

looking for a rec for a super romantic restaurant to celebrate my and hubby's first anniversary. any cuisine except steakhouse and would rather not break the bank (though it is a special occasion so i am open to suggestions). thank you very much! oh and somewhere we could get reservations for this saturday (which should limit options substantially)

  1. One if By Land is usually touted as being the most romantic. Buco is rather nice, Bouley too.

I have heard OIBL is very romantic but I've also heard the food is not so good.

The Bouley recommendation is an excellent one, atmosphere AND food are exceptional.

Oh, almost forgot, we actually rather enjoyed a recent meal at Blue Hill, that could also be a nice choice.

Blue Hill is great, but doubt they could get a reservation this close to the date. OIBL, while very romantic, is overpriced mediocre food. Unless you're in it only for the atmosphere/setting, I'd steer clear. In the same general area and a much lower price point, I'd recommend The Place. Food is very good, nothing groundbreaking but consistently tasty. I find it very romantic as well. My SO and I have had several wonderful dinners there. note that its not on opentable so you'll have to call, but you may be able to still get a reservation for this saturday.
In general, if you give us a ballpark budget for just food, it would help us to give you better suggestions. what breaks the bank for some people is a normal night out for others.

    2. Annisa, Jean Georges, La Grenouille, Bouley (as others note)

All of those are long gone for this saturday.

Tocqueville is very romantic, very good and has tables for this Saturday.

One of my best meals of the year last year and... the couple of youngsters seated next to us had just gotten engaged.

thanks i actually made a tentative reservation there given they had availability.

            1. re: giftergirl

it is the classy silver haired mob for the early seating and a hipper crowd around 9. Don't miss the sea urchin dish ... (unless you hate sea urchin....)
Annisa is booked solid but that would have been another super choice.

Some of the "romantic places" are so kitschy. One if By Land has been a joke for decades.. It's where you'd go to close a deal with a girl back in the 80's

          2. I think you should reset your expectations...

The real question is "Of the restaurants that still have availability for 4/20, which of those are nice enough and romantic enough for an anniversary, but don't cost more than $___ per person?"

Are you willing to eat at 5pm or 10pm? Did you already look on OpenTable?

You also didn't mention a dollar figure, which makes it difficult to help.

              Very strongly agree.

If you're talking about this Saturday, it's bootless to speak in the general.

            2. Felidia, Cafe Boulud, and The Leopard at des Artistes are quite romantic and have openings for this Saturday. If you can request a booth at Lincoln that might work as well.
