Anchovy paste

Hey all,
Anyone know where I can get anchovy paste in Calgary? I have a leg of lamb recipe that I would like to try out. Thanks in advance!

  1. When in doubt: cookbooks co on 11 th ave

    Also Lina's Italian market

    1. You can get it for sure at any of the Italian supermarkets. I get mine either at Lina's or The Italian Store on Skyline Way NE.

      1. Kalamata grocery, any half decent Italian store, Co-op, Sunterra.

        1. Great! Thanks so much :)

          1. On a side note, anchovy paste is packed with glutamates which is the basic source of umami. I add about 1/2 tsp when sauteeing a mixture of garlic/onion/crushed tomatoes (beginnings of red pasta sauce) and it really brings out all the flavours without even adding ground beef. If combined with some tomato paste (while sauteeing the anchovy paste), you can double that punch of flavours, since ripe tomatoes and tomato paste also are sources of glutamates.

You should be able to get anchovy paste at any brand supermarket. It is usually in the fresh fish section.

            2. The Italian Store carries them. I picked up a tube last month for $2-3.

              1. CO-OP carries it. By the fresh fish/meat.

Interesting where your stores are stocking it. Where I live (midwestern US, large city), it's always around the canned fish.

                2. Thanks for all the suggestions! I ended up buying #5 umami paste at Superstore, it has a combination of anchovy paste, olives, balsamic vinegar, and porcini paste. The lamb was really tasty, but the paste ended up a bit on the drier side. Next time I will mix in more olive oil for the rub (I will be tweaking the recipe tomorrow) Thanks again :)

                  1. I saw it in Safeway yesterday. It was in the refrigerated section near the cream cheese.
